 I'm missing the left side temperature control knob on my console and have been advised by the dealers that the whole panel has to be replaced at a cost of approx. $1,100; this seems a bit beyond the pale even by LR standards;any wrecked D3s out there with a knob for sale for a lesser price

What the heck were you doing to loose your knob 
Don't know of any D3's being wrecked. Might be one in Russia that got speared by a pole.
