Towing electrics, dash fog light now on when in reverse..?
Hi all,
I have recently fitted (second hand) genuine LR twin towing electrics to my 04 HSE and now have the yellow rear fog light symbol come on the dash when I select reverse... The actual light doesn't appear to come on but im told the reverse light on the passenger side is dimmer than the drivers side.
When trailer is connected the rear parking sensors are deactivated automatically, I haven't had the car programmed.
do we think a re-programme would resolve this or are the electrics too new for my older car.1974 S111 SWB 200di conversion, rag top, bronze green. Known as Munch

Sounds like a short on the socket they are prone to corrosion !
It would be the first place I'd check

good tip
which socket do you mean though? the actual trailer sockets or the connecting sockets in the rear light well?
the light comes on with or without trailer socket in use.
the 2nd hand wiring was in good nick, looked like it had hardly been used, certainly no corrosion on it. I would have said the car looks like its not had electrics fitted before so if there was corrosion it would be in the connecting sockets in the rear light well.
how do you resolve a short anyway? a clean and squirt with WD40?1974 S111 SWB 200di conversion, rag top, bronze green. Known as Munch

I'd start with the actual trailer socket !
Did you have a look at the wire connections inside the socket before you fitted it ?
If there is no short or green menace inside the socket I would disconnect the electric inside the rear quarter panel and see if you still have the problem if no problem then looks like you have a short somewhere in the loom of the towing electrics you have purchased !!MY18 D5 HSE LUX😎

Be very careful not to short the indicator light power cable/s on chassis when fiddling with the socket - mine was shorted before I got it and when I used it with a trailer, I lost sidelights and 1 x indicator on the trailer due to a main card problem under dash. Result, my trailers don't have right indicator and running lights now powered with permanent power from socket ( main card too expensive to think of here! ) Life always good with a Landy

Were the electrics from a D3 or D4? Do they have the fuse box in the loom that came with them?

Ok, will check condition of sockets first and then disconnect to test. It wasn't happening before I fitted it so I fully expect there to be an issue in the wiring I bought.
I'm not 100% sure if d3 or d4 but I reckon it's d4. I will check in morning as still has part number on them.1974 S111 SWB 200di conversion, rag top, bronze green. Known as Munch

And yes it does have the fuse box built in to the loom.1974 S111 SWB 200di conversion, rag top, bronze green. Known as Munch

OK if it has the fuse box then it is a D3 loom. You can't use a D4 towing electrics loom on a D3 and vice versa 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

Just been investigating.
The aux socket has some green oxidisation in one of the holes. See pics.
Is it possible that this is the cause? If so how is it best to clean it up? Don't want to cause more damage by poking the wrong tool in the wrong place.1974 S111 SWB 200di conversion, rag top, bronze green. Known as Munch

Clean it with some fine emery paper, but you really need to have a look in the back of the socket, which is where the problems start and check all wires are secure and there is no shorts between cables !!MY18 D5 HSE LUX😎

Well, solved this issue.
Turns out the bulb on the reverse light was the cause. After about an hour of testing and head scratching my father in law happened to have popped in and gave the rear light an 'old school whack' and fixed it....
I must have disturbed it when I removed the light cluster when fitting the tow electrics. I removed the bulb which had some green oxidisation and cleaned it up and put it back.
All is good now.
Wish I could say the same about my suspension.. 1974 S111 SWB 200di conversion, rag top, bronze green. Known as Munch
