contstant droning noise front front of Disco3 |
|
Hi All
Im new to here so Hi everyone
Ive got a couple of questions if anyone on here can help with them please.
I have a 2005 Diesel manual Disco 3 with 92k and it drones whilst driving. It starts at about 10mph and doesnt change its pitch or tone. Its just constant.
It has just had new Front Anti Roll bars with ball joints and new front suspension bushes.
It has new continental 20" tyres and wondered would anyone know what this drone is? Could it just be the tyres? It doesnt change on road surfaces either!!
The second is when changing gear I have noticed that the turbo give a high pitch squeak then whirrs and then stops, also if you are driving say at 70mph steady, you can hear a high pitch whirr and if you either release the accelerator slightly or depress it then the sound goes! Is this a turbo fault or could it be a split pipe somewhere??
And the 3rd! Lol
Its had a new clutch too but the gear stick has quite a bit of play in it, it goes into gear ok but reverse is abit sticky. Can this be tightened up to make it more crisp??
Any advise and pointers would be great.
Thanks
Craig

I have similar problems and not sure whither it is the wheel bearings or the front diff, will be interested in what replies you get.

A test I did for the front droning noise was to raise each front wheel.
Put hands firmly in the 12 and 6 o'clock position and see if there is any play.
If there is then there's a very good chance its a wheel bearing.
It certainly was on mine.
On your gearbox Craig search the site for selector pin, I think, sounds similar to needing one of those and I believe its a fairly straight forward job.
Cheers.
Dave

Regarding your floppy gear stick and difficulty selecting reverse, search the forum for Detent Spring coz yours needs replacing. Mods:

Thanks for your replies.
Just an update, ive jacked up the Disco and found that the front passenger side turns freely with grinding noise and doesnt move when pulled back and forth however when doing this on the drivers side it grated as though some sand is stuck and sounds like grating metal. It also rocks back and forth a few centimeters, so guess this is my cause of the noise and its the wheel bearing problem.
Now, I have to do a journey tomorrow of about a 150mile trip, would this be advisable as I need to set off at 10am so can't get it to garage to be fixed!??

Thanks BigDave
Ive taken your advise and the Disco is in the garage.
Theyve quoted £253 which I think is reasonable!
Once I get it back ill crack on with the detent spring/circlip.
Any tips on doing this?
Ive found a couple but not sure which ones right, any ideas?

If you want genuine LR parts then our sponsors Duckworth Parts and Yeovil Land Rover will supply at a discount over the list price that Brit-car charge - plus Brit-car is expensive for small items as postage costs are high. 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti
