Engine replacement company

Hi All

My Discovery 3 2.7TDV6 cam belt gave way on Friday at 97k miles wrecking the engine.

I have had the car since it was 11 months old (sept 07 car) and it has been running fine (I just returned from a 1600 mile trip to the south of France to collect a large car with my trailer and averaged 24.4mpg)

It was due to have the belt changed in 3k miles but I have been doing the servicing for the last 40k miles so not worth talking to Land Rover for a warranty claim.

I want to get a used or remanufactured engine fitted and there are plenty of places advertising on the net.
Trouble is I have been told that parts for the engine are not available so how are the companied remanufacturing the engines? Are they just popping a used engine in?

Does anyone on here have any experience of any of these companies - good or bad.

I love the car and want to keep it for a few more years, but a brand new engine is not cost effective.

Any comments much appreciated.

Still worth speaking to LR, they have paid out 50%, 75% & 100%, even without full LR service history.

If it is an oil pump casing failure (cam belt tensioner ripped out) then it is not a serviceable part, so dealer history should not be important or have any bearing on the discussion.

I would speak to Land Rover customer services, and possibly contact Bodsy on here who knows a lot about the subject.

Don't just roll over and accept it, it is a faulty manufactured part that has destroyed your perfectly good engine.

If all fails, a second hand engine from reputable source is best way to go.

have u stripped the engine to see the extent of the damage could just need valves replacing give broadfields garage a call they are based in dunmow so not to far from you

She is off for investigation and repair tomorrow.

If we can get away with just heads I will be very happy but the LR specialist also has a good s/h engine if I need one.

This time next week I should know how hard a hit I will take.

Update and WARNING.

I have got my Discovery III back and running well.

However, the cause was a failed casting where the cam belt tensioner is mounted. Apparently the casting was changed in 2005 and a web on the inside of the casting was deleted weakening the area. It affects cars with the 2.7 TDi engine from 2005 to 2007.

I have been lucky that the inside of the engine was OK but the bill is quite substantial due to the fact it is a difficult to get at repair but also the high cost of parts (36 M6 bolts at £140+VAT!!!).

The tensioner was still spinning nicely so it was not the cause of the casting failure. The repairer has another car in this week with the same problem so mine is not a one-off.

It may be that as the belt wears/stretches the tensioner adds load on the casting in a way that finds it's weak point. My advice would be to change your cam belt and tensioner at 80K miles or 4 to 5 years of age to avoid a job costing at least £3.5k

Did you seek a contribution from LR? If so, may you tell us? As posted by other members, above in this thread & elsewhere on the forum, there have been varying offers, and this is a not-unknown failing for which more examples are expected, so all data is useful.

I didn't seek assistance from Land Rover as the car is 7 years old and outside the cam belt change age (but inside the mileage). I have to say I was unaware of the age restriction on the belt which is very different to the mileage if you are doing average mileage of 10k!

My reasoning was that they would want to fit a new engine and I could see me being left with a very large bill if they were unwilling to fund all or a major part of the repair.

It is the only one of my 6 cars to have a cam belt. The rest are chains, pushrod or shaft drive so I rather blame myself for not being on-the-ball over the time element.

I am not a regular on this forum as my Discovery is my everyday workhorse and the majority of my other cars are more fun.

I would still have talked to LR as this is a known faulty part and they have put new engines in cars with a major contribution to the cost on their part.

I don't have the parts as I left them with the repairer.

If I had not been doing the servicing myself for the last 45k miles then I might have taken it to Land Rover.

As other have said this is not a service art and many have successfully not money towards the repair from LR despite not having LR service history.
