Side light north america style possible.
Hi guys
Spoke to my dealer, new car is build last week and should arrive at dealer within 2 weeks (it needs to take the boat to Holland)
I asked them about the possibility to activate the red and orange side marker lights in the light units, it looks like in the light units the leds are installed in a MY14?
I tried to search on the forum, but can not find a clear description how to do it.
Dealer is willing to look into it, but any help is great
1. Are de side lights already mounted?
2. Can a dealer activate them and what setting do we need to change?
3. Do i or dealer have to install extra wiring or lights?
Thanks for your help

Find out if they are legal in NL first, I doubt if they are TBH.

Hi DN,
They are legal, I just registered a Fiat 500e from california in Holland, it has the same lights and no problem.
As long as the front ones are orange and the back ones red, it is legal
What does tbh mean?

Dutch law didn't accept constant burning side lights.
If you have a car, that was first registered in another country, where they're allowed (like the US) and build in as standard, you get permission to leave them in. So if your car is registered first time in the Netherlands, you aren't allowed to use the side markers.
Nevertheless, we had the same topic in a german forum a few weeks ago, the german dealers can't activate them. Maybe there would be a way with an IIDTool or something similar.Cheers Patrick from Munich

Not sure on MY14. For earlier D4 the front headlights have the mounting holes but no wires or bulb holders (which is the opposite to the D3 lights, which have the wires and bulb holders but the mounting holes are blanked and need to be drilled out).
Can easily be done though on the front for pre 14MY, and doesn't need activating I've done it The rears are more difficult and I haven't attempted these yet.
I used these which I got from ebay - they were fractionally too big for the holes so just needed trimming with a Dremel slightly.

And wired them into the sidelight wires in a way so that they could easily be removed if necessary.

Just remember the side markers use 3w bulbs not the 5w ones used elsewhere on the car.

I was surprised by this. Does this mean that all Volvos sold in the Netherlands do not have their side markers activated? Almost all current Volvos have side markers front and rear identical to those for north American markets, they seem to be activated in every other European country.
It is clearly legal in the UK to have side markers because many cars are sold with them (usually Volvos) from new.

Where are these lights? Are they the orange side marker ones? Or the ones that turn on when you steer just infront?

I was referring to the orange front side marker lamps fitted as standard to NA spec but not fitted to Euro spec.

Sorry for late response.
From what I know, there seems to be a difference in the direction, the lights shine (does this make sense in english? hope so). If they are side lights and burn constantly, they are not allowed. If these lamps shine in the front direction, they are allowed (even if you see the shine from the side, but not the lamp). But they must be switchable.
I'll try to find some english documents in the next days, right now I only have the german docs.
I have the same in my XC90, they only burn, when the normal light is on. I'm sorry, I try, but my english doesn't seem good enough to explain this the way I want to.. Cheers Patrick from Munich
