Wheel bearing sound, replaced but still not right |
|
I've had a wheel bearing noise coming from the front drivers side, so I replaced the bearing hub and the sound is still there and I'm not sure if it's just me but I think it's getting louder when I turn to the left...any ideas folks? Thanks

It's like a whining sort of sound, I've changed a few bearing in the past and this is that sound but my first point was wheel bearing and it's not that 04 discovery 3 SE

With the symptoms you describe it is indeed very "wheel bearing" like. It's been asked before but I'll ask again. Did you replace both front wheel bearings or just the driver's side? Usually when we hear a wheel bearing noise and are 100% convinced it is one of them, it is always turns out to be the other one! How did you pinpoint it to the driver's side?
If both bearings are new (you can have noisy bearings without noticeable play, hence why I say NEW), then there's a few other possibilities (in order of most common occurrence):
1. Front Diff
2. CV Joint/s
3. Driveshaft/s
As you say, front diff doesn't usually change when turning, but you never know. CV joints usually make a different noise (clicking) when they're failing. Driveshafts I never had any problems with so no idea what noise they make. Dennis

I have a noise, seems like I have mtr tyres on. The humming type noise gets worse on deceleration, does not change with surface type or corners. Local garage said the only thing making a noise is the front left wheel bearing, I have now changed that along with the track rod ends that they said were shot! Just done the diff oils this evening. The noise is still there and gradually getting worse
Is this likely to be a diff? Very worried about the cost!

Unfortunately it does sounds like a diff if it gets worse on deceleration. Did you examine the diff oil? Any metal shavings in the front diff oil? That might help determine which it might be
Try to raise the car off the ground (all 4 wheels) and rotate the propshafts by hand and have a listen. If it's bad enough you might be able to hear the noisy diff. When my front diff was on it's very last legs it was extremely obvious, lots of hushing from the front diff casing when turning the front propshaft by hand. If yours is not so bad yet, it might not be that obvious. You could try using a mechanic's stethoscope. Don't forget the transfer case too, another common cause of whine.
If it were a wheel bearing it would make a noticeable difference if you were turning or going straight. In any case I don't like changing just one wheel bearing as it's notoriously common to change one that we're convinced is the cause of noise, only to realize it was the other side. Dennis

I have had a bad experience with a new bearing that wasn't OEM - it lasted 10 months and always squeaked then it got really bad and I changed it for OEM and the problem went away - it could be a bad bearing? -------------------------------------------------------------------

what make was it. LR obviously don't manufacture bearings they just buy them in - All the OEM ones ive seen have been made by Timken - they may chop and change manufacturers though. Duncan

The new one I put on was a genuine Timken one. The noise is the same as when I had the old bearing on. Just about to go and check the drivers side now as now the noise is getting louder it feels like it is beneath my feet!!!!
