Ambient light sensor for 'auto' setting?!

Maybe its the sensor for High Beam Assist? My 2013 model has the sensor in the front of the mirror, and it doesn't work too well, so maybe they improved it?

Its not the rain sensor, that's in the gubins in the mirror and it has no outside window. If it was for remote park heat I would have thought it would have been on the sport....so next guess people Mike

How old is the D4? I do not think it is not a factory fit item so perhaps go back to the dealer and ask them. The rain sensor and high beam assist are all built into the mirror housing.MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

it does have a headlining cut out, so not too much of an after thought, but why whatever it is couldn't be included in something else already there...there are a few other options.

Does it give any clues? like does it whirr, or tick, or have any lights on it? Are the cut outs at the bottom holes to the inside?
