I'm looking to introduce a colleague to some gentle off roading as he's just getting into land rover ownership.
We're based in the Bristol area, so any ideas for places to go would be appreciated.
I've been to Salisbury Plains a few times, but some pointers on the best routes would be helpful. Alternatively, if there are any good pay and play sites open during the week in the Bristol, Swindon, Reading areas, that would be great.
Thanks in advance.

around Marlborough is the closest - the few lanes there are around Bristol are narrow and very scratchy - your paintwork will get trashed.
the Marlborough lanes are OK - they used to be really good but the council repaired all the lanes so they are just gravel tracks now. there are still some good ones though - buy the 1:25K explorer map nos :157 (the one with the picture of the Horses !!) Duncan

Dunc, if you do the Marlborough lanes, I'll tag along if I may? I've done the Plain, but never up towards Marlborough.

It probably won't be for a month or so as the chap's partner is expecting a baby, due in August.

Some great lanes in Marlborough off the main Ridgeway. Beware if you go through the old Yatesbury airfield at the back of Avebury, the end lane is very scratchy indeed!
A video I shot a couple of years ago there. The real scratchy stuff starts at about 11 mins.

Another nice lane in Rockley.. Excuse my wifes yelps!

Yes it is, was even worse last year when I went. Guy with us had a pristine disco 2 that had never been off road before.
Safe to say it looked a little different after!

been there a few times in the Defender. Stopped going and certainly wouldn't go in the D3/D4 - its full of idiots , as are most pay and play sites. anywhere that allows trailered vehicles on site stay clear of. most havnt got Insurance or MOTs and the drivers don't car who they hit. Don't know if Dundry insist on vehicles having insurance for Third party damage, they didn't when I went. Some charge and say its for insurance, but often that just covers personal injury and doesn't cover the vehicle as well.
may have changed though as I gave up of these places several years ago - check before you drive them Duncan
