How does the electronic handbrake "self release"?

Hi all, I have recently adjusted the brake shoes on the handbrake system and I was wondering how the self release system works... is it electronic? ie a sensor on the wheel sends a signal to the release mechanism or is it a mechanical system like those on braked trailers?

Also it seems to release when moving off in reverse... how does it know the car is not rolling back?

Thanks in advance.

farmerboy I seem to recall that the EPB releases only upon 30% power application which would explain why it holds on hills. And yes, much of its actions are electronically controlled.

The old girl is on her third engine...
* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)

Hello there farmerboy.
As the previous "speaker" said, it´s electronically released.

If You apply more than 5% throttle, it will release,
or if You press the brakelever.

Will adjustment sort a slight squeek when applying epb?

It did with mine - although I actually removed the disks and gave everything a good clean up and lubrication. The brake pads looked ok with plenty of life left in them but there was a lot of brake dust.

Thanks all for the replies - the epb is more sophisticated than I imagined!
