Clunk knock from front

Looking for a little help from the collective knowledge on here please - I've already spent 5 days searching so just trying to narrow options.

D3 has approx. 35K on clock

Double 'clunk' knock from front end, possibly NSF, at low speed and when turning started last week on holiday but didn't occur on a wet day.

Using the knowledge base on here I think I've eliminated the following:-

It's not the bump stops, they are greased and it doesn't occur on full lock

Don't think it's the lower arm bushes - no knocks when dabbing brakes at 15 - 20mph

Doubt it's the front hub bearings since no vertical (12 & 6) play in either front wheel

Don't think it's the ARB bushes - I replaced these with uprated bushes about 3K ago

At home and on axle stands there is no apparent play in the lower ball joints or droplinks or ARB. and cant replicate the noise with a bar trying to move the lower arms.

BUT - there is slight lateral (3 & 9) play in the front wheels but can't feel any play in the track road ends - is this normal since I seem to remember there was always play in the D1?

So - if I discount the above as causes of the knock is it logical to think that the inner tie rods may be wearing and causing the play and knock?

Should add it passed it's MOT in March with no advisories.

Have you checked the lower steering column? The universal joint is known to seize and results in a knocking that can be felt through the steering wheel.

Sorry should have mentioned that the knock can't be felt through the steering wheel, also doesn't seem to occur until after driving 10 miles or so, ie not there when car is cold first thing

Hard to say, but it could also be a CV joint on the way out.

Don't take the "play at 12 and 6" as a guarantee for bearing sanity. My front wheel bearings had zero play in them but were as noisy as a noisy thing.

Similarly, the "dabbing the brakes at 15-20mph" is not a complete wishbone bush test. It highlights the most common culprit bush (the lower arm hydra bush). Although 35k is a bit early for wishbone bushes to fail unless you drive on the moon.

I also had a weird knock when turning at slow speed a while back. Turned out the wheel alignment shop didn't tighten up the camber adjusting bolt (the eccentric cam bolt) tight enough. But that was a single loud knock which 99% of the time only happened when getting out of a parking space and then again usually only first thing in the morning... never happened when at my indy. This one took me long to track down...

Other than that, other possibilities will be driveshafts, or front diff, and a much lesser possibility (since you say you don't feel it through steering) is the steering rack.

35k is really little mileage for anything to fail really so I'm not positive about any of the above Confused

Hi Nighthawk - thanks for the reply

Hopefully not a bearing - replaced last year with Timken bearings so that will be a guarantee job if it is but no play or grind (and it's an ear splitting grind when they go!!)

Wheel alignment hasn't been done for a while, and when stealer replaced bushes under warranty they forgot to tighten cam bolt (by about 15mm!!)resulting in an interesting conversation and full re-alignment/steering sensor check etc to stop it going into limp mode so I have a bad (good) habit of checking when wheels are off.

Hopefully not diff

so slowly coming down to inner arms or base of rack

Option could be take company car route and turn the radio up Wink

Both inner steering track rods and steering rack would be felt through the wheel.

If I were you I'd give the outer CV joints a good check as they are still my prime cheap suspect. If the rubber boot is split, it will wear very quickly and worn CV joints do make noises when turning at slow speed. Awfully low mileage for them to fail but as I said, if the boot is split or it lost it's grease, it wears very quickly.
