engine failure

Hi can anyone help, we bought a Land Rover Discovery 3 07 plate in July from a Mitsubishi dealer. They provided a 3 month warranty and sold me a extended warranty for a further 2 years, which I thought was internal warranty provided from the garage. However, 3 months on I have received a letter from garage enclosing a Mitsubishi used car warranty document. Since we purchased this car I have had two wheel bearing replaced and an air-suspension fault which the garage rectified as it was in the first 3 months. Then on Monday whilst driving to work I heard a noise coming from engine and then a few seconds later the engine failed and would not restart. As the warranty was now with Mitsubishi I rang them who told me to send it to land Rover for them to investigate. The Land Rover garage has confirmed the engine will need to be replaced and they would need to do a two hour investigation to find out the reason for this failure which would cost £312. I have heard there is a fault with the 07 plate engines which can cause sudden failure which complete destroys the engine. Has anyone heard of any manufacturer defects on this year of discovery? We have also been told by Mitsubishi the warranty is invalid as the garage should have not sold it and then set it up to start 3 months after we had bought it. Any advice comments would be gratefully appreciated.

What's the mileage on the car? The belts should have been done at either 105,000 miles or 7 years

As posted on another thread today -

Fortunately you have bought from a registered dealer. Irrespective of the age of the car, and any warranties (or none), you have a 6 months period from purchase to identify problems and get them fixed:

The consumer returns the goods in the first six months from the date of sale and requests a repair or replacement or a partial refund. In that case, the consumer does not have to prove the goods were faulty at the time of sale. It is assumed that they were. If the retailer does not agree, it is for the retailer to prove that the goods were satisfactory at the time of sale. This comes from Sale and Supply of Goods to Consumers Regulations 2002, derived from EU Directive 1999/44/EU which became Clauses 48A to 48F inclusive of the Sale of Goods act in April 2003.

(But I've never known anyone to actually have used those rights).
