Great suggestion from Euan so big thanks to you. The nasty 'I am about to implode' grinding noise at 2k revs ended up being a very worn belt tensioner on the alternator.
Diagnosed in 2 minutes, replaced within 15.
Cant fault it, great service and nice guys. James favourite hobby is writing in the third person.

Only had cause to use them once after I proved that the capabilities of any Land Rover (in this case, an FL2) can be overcome by the stupidity and pig-headedness of the driver (i.e. me) when I took the car off road. Involuntarily. Into a ditch. And hit a boulder. Long story, but really illustrated the "pride comes before a fall" saying.
Anyway - got Mastoro to check the FL out - ran it on to the ramps and found no damage to the chassis etc., so car was fully driveable. Wouldn't take any money for their time, but whilst I was waiting, I could hera them talking to other customers. They know their stuff.
