Ebay listing - would you buy if the seller did this?
The original listing was for a brand and size of tyre that fits the D3 and was an auction set to run for six days without any buy it now or best offer facility.
In the description it stated there were four tyres available and that they were worn to about 6mm even tread across the tyres but the listing was only for one.
When I messaged the seller asking how I could buy two tyres they said I could pay them double the starting bid plus a bit for wrapping for BigDave to collect and they'd edit the listing to reflect two had sold or I could pay cash on collection. Wishing to avoid a 3 hr round trip I expressed doubts about paying direct through paypal rather than bidding through the auction. They said our emails and paypal meant they couldn't not send them. The seller pointed out their paypal id was at the end of the listing and was the only way they could give this. Paypal are clear that this sort of deal is not protected.
As they couldn't confirm whether there were puncture repairs till their partner returned I awaited their reply and sure enough three have puncture repairs not revealed in the original listing.
Soon after this reply the listing was ended so I inquired to be told the tyres were still available and which day was best for collection and that they'd not seen payment yet.
The seller has a reasonably high and 100% positive feedback score, but what makes me suspicious is why anyone would not just list the tyres as a buy it now with a best offer auction and show 4 as available. Why bother going to such trouble to save a few pence in ebay and paypal fees and d1ck about with sellers?
Is it worth spending 50% of the price of brand-new tyres for part worn puncture repairs with 6mm tread given all this and just ask them to relist sensibly for me to buy with confidence?
Or should I not risk my family's safety for a few quid in the long run and put the lack of straightforward dealing down to the fact they're from a RRS?

I think you summed it up at the end (not the bit about RRS owners!).
Tyres and brakes are the two things between you and oblivion aren't they?
I'd not want to run second hand tyres, with unknown provenance (puncture repairs - how about invisible damage within the side walls though potholes or kerbing them?).
For what you are saving - is it worth the worry? At least with buying new, you know they are undamaged and made to a standard. Even cheap tyres are made to a standard (usually the same one as expensive tyres) and while they might not last as long as an expensive set, they will probably last longer than a second hand set.
3 with punctures in the chaps listing seems a lot to me - where does he live? On a bombed out site of a nail factory?

My intuition is the same Simes. Provenance is too important when it comes to safety.
Think I'll shop around and get some tyres fitted and backed up with a guarantee.VR6 > 330D Touring > D3 HSE > !?XC90?!

For a vehicle that weighs nearly 3 tonnes and a the cost of a full tank of Diesel = £110
I think saving a couple of hundred quid on 2nd hand tyres is mental!
Somebody else isn't using them for a reason.
Of stuff that need to 100% right tyres are high on the list.

Also this has scam or spammed account all over it...If it ain't broke... Take it apart anyway, how else you gonna find out how it works

Tyres are the only thing that allows you to control the 2.5 tons of metal that you strap your kids into and then drive off down the road at 70mph.
Never buy secondhand and always buy the best ones that you can afford.

Couldn't agree more! Why buy second hand tyres? Where is the upside to that ?

Say a set of tyres last 30k
You pay 1.45 a litre and you get ave 25mpg
30,000miles would cost you about £8000!
Just about 73 fill ups.
Say a full set of new tyres are £550 ish
You'd gonna spend Half of that on 2nd hand ones so your additional cost of news tyres is £275 over that of 2nd hand tyres
So that's £4 per tank of diesel
And obviously news tyres will last longer.
I'm as Yorkshire as it gets and will save money where I can, but for less than £4 extra per fill up it's a false economy!

You could be more Yorkshire - what about the likely cost to fit & balance four S/H tyres?

Factor in cost of fitting and balancing each wheel 4 x £15? = £60
Courier Costs = £20
Only 6mm left (8mm New - 1.6mm = 6.4mm of usable tread) 6.4mm - 2mm = so 31% worn
So 31% fewer miles = 9300 miles
So £275+£60+£20 = £355
Difference is now £195 but you'll get 9300 fewer miles which is 31%
So that's £2.67 per fill factored down by 31%
So New tyres would cost £1.84 more per fill over the life of the new tyres*
*Based on 30,000 miles per set of tyres, my last Generals lasted 42k
