Pretty much anything with 4WD gets classified as a 'jeep' in the advert blurb. I think people thinks it makes it sound better in many cases and in the balance of cases it's just they don't know any better.......

I always read 'jeep' to be an indication of somebody flogging a lump of metal rather than being a caring owner selling their own loved for vehicle - read the descriptions in adverts and you'll see what I mean. It usuall has phrases like "this jeep will get you anywhere in any weather" (even if it's a Honda CRV they're talking about..... Rolling Eyes), "this jeep has lots of gears to keep you going", etc.

If someone here describes their D3, D4, RRS or FFRR as a "Jeep" - then I tend to either ignore their posting, or discount anything they say by 50-75%.

A Jeep today is a product of the Chrysler Group.

During the second World War Willys and Ford were contracted by the American government to build a general purpose, personnel, or cargo carrier especially designated as 1/4-ton 4x4 Truck - the "General Purpose" tag was probably the origin of the term "Jeep".

It's Censored annoying isn't it, a bit like referring to a vacuum cleaner as a "Hoover".

I suppose it originates from the general perception that Willys Jeep was the first 4x4 all terrain vehicles as NJSS says.

With a little bit of checking around though, it seems Porsche was the first with 4 electric hub motors in 1900.

It appears though the first "proper" 4x4 with a 6 cylinder engine and a transfer box was actually made by Spyker in 1902

http://www.4wdonline.com/ClassicCars/Spyker.html

So perhaps those who persistently refer to anything 4x4 as a "jeep" should change to a "spyker" Confused

I tend to consider there are greater issues than someone not familiar with the vehicle getting it wrong. Perhaps they get other things in their life wrong too. All the best to them but I will be happily driving around in my fuel bomb not really caring if it's called Jeep, Disco, Car, Truck or George Rolling with laughter
