Restricted Performance VERY Infrequent
Hi,
This is possibly impossible to answer without fault codes but I have twice now experienced an annoying restricted performance for no apparent reason (and nearly a month apart).
My 2013 SDV6 had stood overnight and all day in a compound (I am retired but occasionally deliver motorhomes and leave my car overnight) - when I drove away at teatime on both occassions the 'restricted performance' warning flashed up - with care could get the car up to 60mph so drove the 16 miles home and planned to get it checked over following days.
Car stood overnight and on both occassions the car started fine next morning with no warnings and normal performance !
Both these events seem completely random and if there is a problem why does it a) start after car hasnt been used and b) go away with no remedial action.
Any wild theories would be much appreciated
Only thing I could think of of, unlikely as it seems, is that the windswept area somehow caused a temporary issue ?? (crazy)
Only other time I have had this warning was when a turbo boost pipe split but that caused a continous warning.
Cheers
Jon

I would invest in a GAP tool or a reader that's compatible with your car.
Code is the answer.
Why wait, just go for it and enjoy life.

I have been getting this problem for years. If there is any common fact is could be when accelerating at a reasonable rate. Fortunately it goes away after a short stop so no need to struggle on, but it does not leave any codes.A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

My split inlet manifold behaved like this. Only occasional Restricted performance messages and no codes. If I drove sedately - below ~2500rpm - then no messages. Went on for months before I did something about it.D1 300Tdi - gone
D2 Td5 ES (Alive remapped...mmm) - sadly gone

Thanks - tried pulling up, switching off, locking and leaving for a couple of minutes but that didnt work (mebee didnt leave it long enough)
One commonality is that it was gentle acceleration on both occasions

A sticking turbo actuator was the cause of the
random restricted performance on one of my D4’s.2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

Could it be a dodgy EGR valve?
I think in one of my EGRs sometimes gets stuck open, leading to very poor performance when I first start up in the morning, but then gradually gets better as the day progresses. I don't see any on-dash warning and no error codes at the time, but live values show one EGR at 5% and the other at 75%. Once the car is above 2,000 RPM it drives normally but it won't freely rev to there at first. The 75% figure slowly descends until later in the day both EGRs are at 5%. I think this only happens after a long run at motorway speeds, where I presume the sticky EGR is sitting wide open for prolonged periods, so it seems fine when I get home and only shows as a problem the next time I drive out - which sounds a bit like the problem in Johnny V's case.Previously:

I am a real numpty when it comes to all of the new technology, I liked it when you had none of these fancy things to go partially wrong (things either worked or they didnt and you could see the issue).
I can freely rev the engine as high as I like when in restricted performace mode but it has no effect on road speed - to build my road speed I have to keep revs down and build speed slowly, as stated I can get it up to 60 if I am gentle.
You may have a point re running at speed prior to switching off though - in both instances I had run at 70 on Motorway (1800/2000 revs ?) just prior to parking up and switching off, although it was then parked up for c.24 hrs prior to starting up, pulling away and the fault occuring - park up for c.18hrs and fault had 'dissappeared'
To dispel that theory though I regularly do that run, park up for c.8hrs and then drive off with no issues - weird ?
Maybe car gets lonely left in strange place overnight and shows its feelings !

These cars definitely show their feelings! On Monday mine started to tell me off for eating shortbread while driving up the A9 - every time I took another piece I got a warning "bing" and a subliminal red flash from the warning lights. Took me a few attempts to work out that every time I touched the shortbread box on the passenger seat, I was setting off the passenger seat sensor! Previously:

I had this once in 2022. Stopped, Googled it, then looked under the bonnet for any signs of potential intake leakes. Found nothing and when restarted all was good. At service no faults recorded. Since then nothing, in for a service soon!

Could be worth checking your battery, if it’s been stood for a while each time it might not be charging properly, but as said best to get the codes read!I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

I would check your fuel filter first. As that can throw up restricted performance with out any fault codes at odd intervals. Afraid it commonly gets left out at service due to it being a pig to get at and not being able to check if its done.
