Oil in coolant bottle. Disco 4. |
|
Scary finding oil in the radiator coolant bottle. I can't see any cause for this and the vehicle has only covered 104,000 kms. Any ideas guys?

Could be cylinder head gasket, or worse a cracked head or block.
Is there an oil/water mix "mayonnaise" inside the oil filler cap?
Check the coolant for products of combustion.

Yep check inside the oil filler cap for anything that looks like sludge or bubbly yellow frogspawn too

Oil in Coolant - continued |
|
Hi all,
Are you all well? Hope so.
Have the same issue with my 2011 D4 SDV6. There isn't any mix in the oil filler as others may have said to check for.
Took it to a LR dealer and they were complete doom and gloom, though I always get the feeling that if it isn't a new one you bought from them you're not worthy of their time.
He did mention around the oil filter, as well as maybe the EGR but said he'd only ever seen it on a V8.
He didn't seem to think it could be anything to do with oil cooler but 2 or 3 indie LR mechs have come across that.
He did say that it could be a new engine job and a snip at £10k but also said that it is currently hard to get hold of an engine at present.
How did you get on with yours please?
Cheers, Paul

I had this a while back. Was the oil cooler.
New oil cooler fitted, problem solved.
I absolutely agree with what you say about main dealer, find yourself a decent LR specialist! 2005 Disco3 HSE Auto 😁

Hi Bubblehead,
Thanks for your reply.
It would seem like it is somewhere around there. There has been some oil pooling around the filter housing too.
There can't be a lot of it (as yet) as I rarely have to top the engine oil up too.
I got the impression from the dealer that they were trying to fob me off and you're right, need to find someone who is a specialist really.
Thanks for your help.

Hi again,
Turns out after all their machinations that it couldn't possibly be the oil cooler on a SDV6, it's the oil cooler.
There's another couple of leaks like one on the inlet manifold and there's a turbo pipe needs some TLC, but not as fatalistic as what he initially made out.
Hopefully the LR specialist near me will enjoy taking it on.
Worth the investigation both on here and getting them to do some diagnostics rather than just pie-ing it off.
Thanks.
