We've been 6 or 7 times and it's great. We've not used any campsites, but there are plenty. We always stayed in the south, ie the Porto Vecchio and Bonafacio region. There are lovely, sandy beaches, mountain river swimming, walks, culture and everything else you could want from a summer holiday destination. It helps if some-one in your family can speak French and in July half of Europe turns up, so it can get a little busy, but easy enough to work round. There's some of good guide books and online help. I can give you more info on this region if you want.

Corsica looks very nice.
Might consider it this year rather than France.

Thanks for the pictures and advice, any suggestions on the best crossings, or the best day to cross/come back?

Best crossings?
Never during June and August!
We took the over night ferry from Savona or somtimes from Livorno to Bastia.
The eastern costline road is to be done much faster than the western one.
But I guess you'll prefer a boat from Marseille or Toulon to Calvi or Ajaccio.
