Engine System Fault at random times

Hi all,

Sorry to be asking for help again Whistle

I get an "Engine System Fault" message appearing on my dash at random times which stays on for roughly 3 seconds. If anything it seems to happen mostly when accelerating or if I let the revs drop too much altough not eclusively so.

The local garage (Cheviot 4x4, Newcastle) read the fault and said the code was something to do with the turbo but they couldnt find fault with it. They also said the code wasnt very specific and it could be one of a multitude of things

It started appearing after the car was run dry of diesel and changing the fuel filters (genuine LR) seems to have helped as it doesnt happen anywhere near as often now.

The local garage cleared the fault and it stayed off for two days but has started again.

Anyone got any ideas as to what it may be?

Had a similar thing with my last D3, it also went to 'low power' mode, which was a bit embarrassing at times !, first diagnosed as a faulty wheel sensor ?, eventually sorted as a fault in the turbo, never happened again in 60 thou.

Does it happen at particular revs? Mine did the ESF very often at 2000rpm. Ended up having a HP fuel pump replaced.

It sounds like the dealer cannot read the Land Rover specific codes, so getting these read properly is a good start. As for running the car out of diesel, this should not be possible unless you have a gauging problem that over-reads.

As with all electronic messages on the D3, double check the battery, connections and alternator charging voltage before spending any money. It this is all ok then brake bulbs and brake switch next.

Post the results of your battery and alternator check back on here and arrange to have your fault codes read by someone, or buy your own tool (as they are a good investment).

Actuator sticking?

Does it feel low on power at times?

That's what was causing my engine system fault, free'd up the rod and it's never returned.

It could well be and it is worth servicing and re-greasing with copperslip in any case.

Thanks for the help all.

It did seem odd that a fault code wasnt specific so I will get that read properly.

Yes, it does seem low on power at low revs, its almost like an old 2 stroke bike hitting its power band from 1500rpm upwards.

I will do all the stuff you wonderful people have suggested and let you know how I get on Thumbs Up

Hmmm, that description could equally apply to EGR valves?

Is yours a late 2006, ie an MY07 or is it still an MY06?

If you look at your VIN (the number written on the little plate behind the windscreen) it will identify the model year. For example from a made-up VIN:

SAL LA A A 1 3 7 A 456789 = MY07

where as:

SAL LA A A 1 3 6 A 456789 = MY06

Thanks Robbie, she is an MY07 Thumbs Up

The fault seems more random on mine Stew but usually when accelerating although it has happened when cruising along in top before.

Hey Pete (and stew),

Have someone read the fault codes and post them here (P0046? P123B?)

It will help to narrow things down. Unfortunately there have been many unnecessarily replaced turbos due to certain fault codes whose description contains "turbocharger", when in reality it is something trivial such as a sticking actuator, EGR issue, or a MAF sensor or MAP sensor issue.

Well from the 'power-band' symptoms, the warning light and the confirmed model year there is a very good chance that this is an EGR issue.

Still need to see the real fault codes.

I hope so Robbie as thats far simpler than a HP fuel pump. I do know one of the EGR's was replaced just before I got her.

I am getting her booked in at Team Valley Land Rover for the belts and pulleys done, the codes read and a general check over. I'll let you know
