Engine system fault
My 05 plate D3 started playing up a couple of months ago. It occasionally went into "limp mode" when I used the kickdown.
I got an engine system fault message every time and occasionally a special programs off message immediately after it. Turning it off and then on again cleared the fault and it would run OK again.
I haven't been using kickdown since then and it was running fine on small/medium throttle openings. My intention was to wait for the weather to warm up a bit then try sorting it.
Today the car went into limp mode on a low throttle opening. I was around 40 miles from home and managed to get it back home at 30mph with at least 10 visits to limp mode. Every time I restarted it the engine was turning over for longer and longer before firing.
I have to turn sharply on tickover to get into my driveway and the engine just died and will not restart.
When I turn the ignition on there is no warning when it does the system check.
Need the fault codes to be sure, but sounds like fuel pressure - so HPFP (High pressure fuel pump) is a likely problem, but could be the drive belt - the later is fairly cheap.
Other things are low pressure fuel pump (In tank - well sort of), fuel filterMark.

As above, the fault codes are paramount for this. Even better, live data would be good. Sounds like a number of things, but the rail pressure feedback sensor would be my first guess. If you can get it, you need to see what readings you have for RPS and PCV on the high-pressure fuel control - that would narrow the options down quite a bit - for the engine when it just idles.

I changed the fuel filter a couple of months ago and as far as I am aware I haven't put any dodgy diesel in the car since then.
I just did the schraeder valve bleed with the ignition turned on and got absolutely nothing so it definitely looks like it is a fuel supply problem.
I will change the fuel filter first.
If I turn the ignition on with the pipes disconnected from the filter am I correct in thinking that I should get fuel pouring from one of them if the low pressure fuel pump in the tank is working correctly?

pump can be had for about £30 if diy and cheapness is what your after. If nothing at the schraeder valve the in tank pump is likely the cause but can you hear anything under the car.Try to prevent keep cranking as this or the fuel filter will be the way to go.

No, I can't hear anything under the rear of the car.
I did wonder if the low pressure fuel pump has it's own fuse and it may have blown as a result of the pump gradually dying.
The engine just stalled and will not restart. There was no warning or display when it happened.

Yes, check the fuel pump relay in the battery junction box and the fuse (Fuse 1). If that is ok you could check that it is drawing current.

That's what mine did it was the rear tensioner bolt , it just stalled with no splutter or anything -------------------------------------------------
if you cant hold on dont let go , it ill come in handy for something even if you never use it.
