Nexus 7 install

Hiya, thought I would share a few photos of my dash install of a nexus 7. It took me a couple of hours to wire it and and cut a few pieces of plastic. I am still waiting on a 2 cables coming from China to get it all finished off.

It was a bit tricky getting the dash panel cut straight but I am over the moon with how it's gone.

I use spotify to play the music at the minute, you are able to download songs and playlist to the device so no internet connection is required.

I used and Y on the go cable so I can charge the nexus and plug a usb stick in at the same time. I then ran a USB extension to the ashtray and another micro USB to charge me phone if needed.

It runs navfree at the minute.

I used a simple cigarette lighter socket and a twin USB charger off eBay.

I think it's loads better than before.

Thanks for looking

Looks a realy neat job. Been thinking of this myself. Is it old or new Nexus 7? Any pictures of how you cut dash?

It's a 2012 nexus 7, a 16gb early one. I managed to install timurs fixed install kernel. Which allows it to power on when it receives power then go into aeroplane mode and deep sleep when ignition is turned off. As soon as I start then car it resumes my music where I left off without even having to touch it.

I cut the dash using a very thin Dremel cutting disc then used a small stone wheel on the Dremel to perfect the cut. Sorry no pics of that bit.

Hi,

I am looking at doing the same nexus 7 install in my D3.

I just wanted to check with you about trimming the H Panel and Cubby hole.

I've already trimmed where I've drawn the red lines . Did you have to trim along the blue line as well?

I can't quite get the h panel to clip back in correctly and I can't work out if I need to trim more off at the red lines or if it is along the top (blue line) that is preventing it from clicking in correctly.

Cheers

Be aware that in sunlight the screen is polarized and if you wear polarized sunglasses they may infact compete with each other and you won't see anything!!!

I had this problem with my 2013 Nexus, with the screen in portrait aspect I could use it, landscape not with sunglasses on!
I fitted an anti glare matt screen protector and that has fixed the problem.

Much better with it on anyway, the gloss screen showed every finger print. Wink

Hiya, my install is still going strong. Had a little problem with the battery going flat when I had used the GPS. This is solved by exiting the app correctly.
I only shaved the H panel, I didn't touch any of the black dash.I removed quite a bit of material from the bottom of the H panel and strained up the sides to match. I had a bit of and issue with the air vent getting in the way and I had to cut off more than I would of liked. The nexus is only held in by the pressure of the H panel and the way it sits on the bottom lip. It works a treat, doesn't move and is really easy to remove.
Hope this help, good luck

Thanks Col182, my install is going pretty well. Just got my OTG cable so now need to work on the air vents. Taking plenty of photos so a write up will follow once the job is done.

Cheers

i have a 2012 Nexus 7 set up in a Brodit holder which works really well for me although not as neat as your install which looks spot on.

The major gripe I have with this device is that it net discharges even when plugged in when you use bluetooth, wifi and gps. For me, even though I'm wedded to Google with their music subscription etc I'm just not sure it's the best device to do a fixed install with. How've you got on with it?

Have you tried running it from a 1 amp even maybe a 2 amp charger with a fast charge cable so it appears to the tablet its a mains charger? I have problems with fast discharge when I run copilot and Bluetooth with my nexus 4. Without the fast charge cable the tablet will only charge at 500mA as that's the USB standard.

Yes, I have - I have a 2A in car charger and mains one. As far as I remember when I looked into it it's a known issue, I think it's even in the device documentation. I don't have the same issue with the Nexus 5 which seems to have a different design in that respect. Asus vs LG?

I trimmed the H panel a bit and made a couple of holes in the side of the right hand air vent to thread the power and aux cable through.

The tablet is held firmly in place by the H Panel when you clip it back on.

Have been looking at android options and also have a Nexus 7 2012 32g tablet, i'm going to make a sort of cradle so that it sits just outside of the cubby hole thus negating any cutting of the dash.
I already did the aux. input mod to the CD400 unit so that i can plug the tablet in and get audio thru the sound system, this way i can remove it to use it out of the vehicle.
Been using Igo Primo for street nav and Oziexplorer for offroad mapping.
