Iron weights

Underneath just in front of the rear bumper are two free swinging iron weights. What are these for? Is it just Mr Landrover's way of adding some extra weight Very Happy

So they make the headlights out of plastic to save weight then put 10 kilos of iron behind the wings.

Most cars on the road have up to 10 tuned mass damper, aka harmonic absorber, harmonic resonance dampers....as said to provide vibration free mechanics and a smooth ride.

They make the headlights out of plastic because they are far stronger than glass Smile

The swinging weights on a D3 (& the D4 ?)

arent the only use on LandRovers...

I well recall the concrete (washing machine like) lump on my first D1 held on with what looked like mini exhaust rubber thing's..it loosed & partially came off.....what a difference when it did

Fortunately was still under warranty

the use of things like this are in the pursuit of reducing NVH ....Noise, Vibration & Harshness....big subject in car development.

where else do they occur ? - Have RRS's, FL2's, FFRR's & Evokes got them ?
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Is it safe to assume that both weights should move equally?

The weight on the driver's side of my LR3 swings or rotates front-to-rear with a rubbery-feeling self-centering action. I think this is normal. The other one has almost no range of motion and makes a sort of scraping sound when forcibly moved. This immobilised weight also has a bright yellow plastic piece attached to the top which appears to restrict the movement and rub against the underside of the load floor. This yellow plastic bit is not present on the other side and looks suspiciously like a plastic shipping retainer.

Could it be that this really is a shipping retainer and that it should have been removed before the vehicle was sold? I couldn't remove it easily and I was afraid to force it. Thank you very much.

I suggest taking a picture and posting it here unless someone else in the know can provide insight on the yellow plastic bit.

The "Mass Damper" should hang with a rubbery damped action as you described. The plastic bit could well be part of the shipping protection. As stated above, post a picture for all to see. Wink

Sorry for the poor quality. It is difficult to get a light source and camera in the confined space. The camera was pointed up and to the rear of the vehicle.

The first picture is further out to show context. The rear frame rail is in the lower portion of the picture and one side of the iron wight is in the upper left. The yellow plastic bit is clipped to the portion of the iron weight which joins the two halves that are on either side of the frame.

The second picture is closer to show more of the plastic clip. If it should be removed, it looks like it could rotate ninety degrees so that the lower "leg" ends up at the same height as the top loop-shaped portion. I think it could be pulled out then.

I don't want to get too aggressive with trying to remove it until I know that it shouldn't be there. Has anyone ever seen one of these plastic clips before? If they are for shipping then it could be that they were only used for markets where vehicles were transported by sea.

Thank you for any insight into this!
