Transfer box oil and where to get it? |
|
One of my jobs to do when the garage gets warmer is to replace the oil in the transfer box.
The Auto box had the surging problem and a double flush has cured that. I got the Shell oil from www.smithandallan.co.uk
Half the price of the marked up Land Rover stuff. How they can charge £22 for a letre just because it's in a LR bottle I don't know!
I've also renewed the rear diff oil as it had to have a new seal on the CV shaft. Castrol SAF-XO from a local supplier in Neath at £12.50 a litre.
But the transfer box oil is proving elusive.
Anybody know where, apart from Land Rover themselves, I can get this stuff? Shell TF0753, I have searched all over and can't find where to get it!
Land Rover recommend the Shell I wonder if anybody has any idea whether any other manufacturer makes it.
Regards
Ian

I haven't spoken to Opie Oils directly, but sadly that oil or anything like it isn't listed on his internet store.
I'll give him a call today and see what he says, unless he comes on in person shortly to answer the question!

I've not found anywhere else other than LR for the Transfer Box oil.
It's called "Special Transfer Box Oil" btw (Seriously it is!)
You'll need to buy 2 litres and ISTR it was about £14/litre. I gave up searching in the end as it was takingtoo much time.

If you are in Wales, try BEARMACH - SWANSEA 4X4 - 01792 792522 - I get all my oils from them - it is about £14/ ltr and I think you need 1.4 ltrs for T Box. They keep it in stock

Hi Chris
Thanks for that information. I will try Bearmach but in Caerphilly as they are closer!
It is amazing that this oil is only used by this Steyr transfer box and Shell only sell it through Land Rover! Restricted practices or what?

They call it SPECIAL TRANSFER BOX OIL - and on the bottle they do not event show the spec of the oil - definately a case of making money at any cost. I bet all it is is EP 80/90 in a fancy bottle!!!

changing the oil at 75.000 is cheaper than changing the transfer box,
It needs the right oil in it ! If you drive expensive cars then they should not be serviced on a shoe string.
Buy genuine than you know its right, I have just changed mine and have 1/2 a litre left over and yes its expensive ( but far to thin to be EP oil ! ) 'Just because you're breathing doesn't mean you're alive'

Argh, this a very interesting point. Even the Disco 3 is becoming affordable to a lot of people, me being one! Servicing is a justifiable expense and is expensive, more so if you take the car to a Land Rover Dealer, less so if you frequent a specialist. In my case I am quite capable to service it myself, thus reducing the costs further.
Good quality parts and good quality oils are essential to the cars life, we all know that, but why buy marked up parts or oil if you can get the same or sometimes better cheaper elsewhere?
The auto-box oil Shell M-1375.4 is a case in point. Dealer price £22 per litre or so, the same oil can be got for £11 per litre if you shop around. wwwsmithandallen.co.uk So why pay the premium price?
It does seem like restricted practice if the Shell oil for the Magna Steyr DD295 transfer box can only be bought from Land Rover.
If anybody is interested, there is an article in the latest LRO by Ed Evans on this box. It is quite detailed with very clear pictures but sadly no clue is given as to where an alternative source is for this oil!

Changed mine at 75K today. Easy job, but I bought a Draper Oil Suction Gun to fill the 'box with. Too expensive to spill!!

Updated oil price £20.58+vat / liter |
|
Just paid £50 inc vat for two liters of Land Rover "Special transfer box oil" and two washers (33 pence +vat each). As I pointed out to the very friendly chap on the parts desk at my local dealer (Sturgess Leicester), this is the most expensive oil I have bought to date! Worth it to keep the transfer box in order of course, just glad it's only once in every 75k miles!.
It is a straight forward job but a syringe (or similar) is a must for the re-fill.

I used the Draper when I did mine but it did leak a bit, I would suggest using a 100ML/150ML medical syringe with a tuble like one of these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/large-medical-sy...4acf0725bf
Cheaper and useful for measuring the exact quanity when changing the diff oils, which you may as well do while you're underneath (although different oil needed). Club Narpy Torch
