Clutch Actuator Circuit High P0903 - permanent
I have transmission range not available on the dash display with the above fault I think being the key one indicated on my MSV 2 - trying to reset the fault results in the the low and high range lights by the switch flashing and the dashboard lights for hill descent flashing and an orange brake light
Turning ignition off and on again resets the light flashing but the fault returns
Prior to this I had park brake fault and special programs off
Any ideas gratefully received

Check the transfer case ECU for water ingress. Very common issue My D3 Build Thread

That was a long time ago - it was actually sunny them!!
Cheers I will have a look
I assume it's unlikely to be the actual actuator in that case

Took the ECU out no evidence of water ingress all connectors good and no corrosion. Battery voltage is also fine 12.59, 15.50 when running
There are a number of other faults on list on the faultmate for other items such as the ABS comm failure with transfer case in addition to other intermittent comm failures with come the other control units such as vehicle dynamics
I am thinking it looks like I need to replace the transfer case but before I spend the money on that could it be anything else
One other thing i did notice when I took the transfer case out was that it was quite warm (the car had not been used for about 5 hours but I had the ignition on going through the fault codes). Is this normal?
Could it be anything to do with the ABS sensors?

Well its definitely the transfer case ecu - I decided to take it apart for interest (chip towards bottom is split and melted)
However if I get a new ecu is this likely to happen to the new box as well its an electrical fault to positive which is very unusual in my experience in a vehicle

did you consider a new chip?
sure so cheap vs new complete module

It's only a Field Effect Transistor that has blown there. Less than £10 before VAT to buy one of these through the post.
Very rare for an integrated circuit to fail like that, but a FET is on the output to all sorts of things that need switching in the gearbox. Might be worth getting the old unit checked for the pin that is connected to your failed FET, just in case the component being switched is faulty (or wiring to same).

I checked the wiring for integrity and shorts and all appeared OK - I still have the ECU so could replace the chip but my soldering is not the best
In addition I couldn't read the details on the chip to purchase a new one - if anyone can give me the details I might purchase one and give it a try

Google BTS244Z, and it will come up with several suppliers of this transistor (strickly speaking, not a chip!!!). I think that there might even be one on Ebay from Littlediode;
These are fairly easy to solder, you just need to be prepared with a clean work area and fresh fluxed-solder to hand. Not as many problems as laying down SMD integrated circuits, etc.
