Grinding Noise and icon on dashboard |
|
So... I was on some loose terrain and I engaged low range with HDC and the gravel program. Every now and then it was making a grinding sound with an icon coming up on the display of a steering wheel and 2 wheels. Should I be worried? I removed the HDC and the gravel program and the noise stopped even though I was still in low range. On the nav screen also the diffs never engaged on the screen so I'm kind of ruling those out.
This is the first time I took it off the road too so could be nothing or could be some stuff never worked as previous owner never took it off Tarmac and didn't know what low range etc. do

Sounds to me like it was the abs or HDC licking in for traction control..

sounds like HDC - it engages automatically when TR mode is changed, which can be a pain at times.
when engaged it will come on when you take your foot off the accelerator even uphill ! Duncan

In fact I was lifting my foot off the throttle when it was happening so sounds good
Thanks for the prompt replies and sorry if it was a daft question but hearing worrying noises when in out away from people is worrying

The display showing the steering wheel and front wheels is to show you which way your wheels are pointing. I think that it comes on when low range is selected.

You can disengage the hill decent control when selecting gravel in TR, by pressing HDC button.

The grinding noise is the HDC, which will kick in every time you lift off the throttle.
Turn it off using the yellow button as others have said, or set the speed at which it kicks in using the +/- cruise control buttons.
The yellow warning light on the dash is the traction control kicking in - on gravel roads with the gravel setting, it is more sensitive. Haven't seen the light flash in general mode on gravel roads, but then maybe I'm not brave enough...

On my 2005MY the HDC is only automatically engaged with mud/ruts TR setting . When you select a TR setting it will show on dash (green LR on slope) if HDC is selected as well.
