Engine failure
I was making my way across France in my 2005 D3 towing a nearly 3 ton trailer and suddenly the revs shot up and the engine started knocking for about a second then the engine gave in. Lights all over the dash and oil spewing from under the car. Ive heard enough engines go to know that there has been substantial damage and have spoken with a friend of mine who has worked on these engines quite alot and he suspects a turbo failure which in turn has taken the engine.
The car should be back in the UK tomorrow so i should be able to give it a proper look over in the coming few days but from what i heard I'm almost certain a new engine and turbo is needed.
So i need to get this sorted pretty quickly as i am loosing money every day it isnt on the road towing.
I was hoping to get your opinions on the best way to go about it?
I see a few companies advertised online and ebay that do supply and fits starting from £2995 most with warranty, is this an option or should i stay away?
My other option is to purchase a second hand engine and do the swap myself with some helping hands however this doesnt look like it could be any cheaper.
I assume i wouldnt get anywhere if i contacted LR UK?
Are there any disco3 recommended specialists in the Essex/Suffolk area?
Any help you guys can give me would be greatly received.

First of all, when was the car last serviced, and who serviced it? Take the oil filter out, and see if it has been crushed, like this:
If it looks like that, and it was a garage, then first call would be to them, to make them aware of what has happened. It happens when the oil filter has been fitted incorrectly, which in turn restricts oil flow to the piston cooling jets, and they start melting...
If it is a genuine mechanical failure, then the cheapest option will be a 2nd hand engine.
My recommendation would be a 2.7 engine from EuroJag. Bought 3 engines from them, with no issues. Quite a bit to swap over as there are a few differences, but the basic block/heads/internals are the same
If you have access to a 2 post ramp, then a body off is not as drastic as it sounds...
I have not mentioned "reconditioned engines" as I still do not trust them. You cannot buy pistons, rings or con rods for them, so I fail to see how they can be reconditioned properly.
That said, there will be a few people who have used them, and never had an issue...
If you are going down this route, Google the company and do your research. Not a lot of them get a good name...My D3 Build Thread

Hi Lee, sorry to hear of your misfortune
Whilst I realise it is unlikely to help you in your own situation, there is currently an initiative on the forum to do some testing on the oil pump casing which has been known to fail. If this is the case with your engine, Bodsy is co-ordinating the response and would be grateful for any parts you are able to send him that have failed. The thread is at

Thanks for the advice guys.
Even if it may cost more i may go down the route of paying someone to fit a new engine as I'm sure it will be done alot quicker i.e back on the road and working alot quicker.
