Help egr

Hi we have a 54 plate d3 which has a fault on starting saying engine management fault have taken it to a garage to get the fault read and it's saying its a problem with the egr however the egr was removed by the previous owner I was under the understanding that blanking the egr pre 07 would not cause a problem with the ecu please any help would be grateful as we are wanting to sell but obviously want to get it sorted, the gentle man at the garage has said get it remapped many thanks in advance for any advice offered Amanda

Hi Amanda, others will be along shortly with more information I am sure but my understanding is as follows:
EGRs are very rarely removed when they are faulty unless it is to replace them with new ones - I think that it has been done but its difficult and somewhat pointless. It is much more likely that your EGRs have been blanked rather than removed.

Blanking faulty EGRs on a 54 plate will not cause the engine management light to come on but the EGRs will still record fault codes in the ECU because technically they are still faulty even though (through blanking) they serve no purpose.

Your garage has most likely seen the fault codes relating to the (presumably blanked) EGRs and assumed that this is the reason that the engine management light is on - which is probably an incorrect assumption.

I hope this clarifies, however you will now need to work out with your garage or someone else what it is that is causing the light to be on.

Sorry didn't mean to put removed they have been blanked any idea as to what would be recording the fault as egr, the garage cleared the fault twice and each time I restarted the engine the same fault registered again

The EGR is recording a fault code because it is faulty, blanking does not make it stop recording the fault code. But the fault code that it records is not what is making the light come on. Therefore I would have thought that the light being on is nothing to do with the EGRs

Did the garage identify any other fault codes when they read them?

When he 1st plugged the fault reader in it also said their was a fault with the turbo as well as the egr fault he said it was either over or under charging (If that makes sense to you lol) but the 2nd and 3rd time he plugged it in the only fault that registered was the egr fault and it still brought up the engine management error on start up

I have heard a LR mechanic mention the EML coming on as a result of blanked EGRs (on pre-MY07 models). He cured it by unplugging the EGR electrical connectors, EML went straight off apparently.

Worth a look under the hood to see if they are still plugged in...

Cheers,

Darren

Amanda - has the engine management fault been present since you owned the vehicle or has it just started happening?

If it has been present since you owned it then I guess taking DiskoStew's point maybe the previous owner pulled the cables off the EGRs at the same time they blanked them?

It started about 2 months after we got it so are the egr electrical connectors not supposed to be connected

You will see the fault code for the egr's when blanked on an 54 plate D3, they will not clear when the the egr's are blanked. You need to check the Turbo actuator rod for sticking, and also the turbo hoses for any spilts.

Flack Thumbs Up
