Strange steering

Sod's law!
We are off skiing next week and my wife has come home this afternoon complaining that the steering feels funny!
I have taken the car for a drive and it seems to be really stiff and gets worse the slower you drive.
The self centering also seems to be affected.
Difficult to describe but it just doesn't feel right.
Checked the tyres, all seem ok.
When we had the disco 3 the steering went stiff and this was down to the UJ at the end of the steering column, but this feels different !
Will need to call dealer tomorrow and hopefully it's nothing major!
It has definitely come on today because she went out this morning and said it was fine, it was when she drove it this afternoon that she noticed it.
Any ideas?
Tim

Hi Tim, it sounds like the same symptoms as when my lower steering UJ seized up, it felt like oversteer round corners as the steering failed to centre up after the turn. You may be able to free it up temporarily with some Plus Gas but will probably need changing long term, about £60 for a new one if my memory serves me right.
Thumbs Up Jem

It's actually 2 years old.
Doesn't feel the same as when the UJ went on our D3, but feels more like the power steering is playing up.
If you turn the wheel whilst stationary it goes light then heavy.
Could it be the power steering pump playing up or perhaps a slipping belt?
Under warranty, so no worries apart from the fact we are meant to be driving to Austria next Friday...
