cold start issues, terrible economy |
|
Hi All,
well after nearly a year with no issues the dream is over. I have on 05' Discovery TDV6 SE with 50,000KM on the clock. Cold starting has been an issue and I have read about the "glow plug" issues, and it's very similar, only when it's -5 or lower and the first start after a night in the cold, the rest of the day is fine. I also noted our economy is terrible, 18L/100kms around town. We used to get at least 13L/100kms. I took her to my indie classic car mechanic who looks after my other toy. They ran a Bosch diagnostic over the car and ZERo faults were displayed.
I have absolutely no warning lights displayed either. I am now about to take her to the Land Rover dealer here (apparently notorious for poor service and the only one within 100 kms) so I am hesitant to say the least.
Any other ideas what the problems maybe if not the glow plugs? Possibly a bung injector or a turbo issue?
Knowledge is power here and with 50K on the clock and the tow bar never been mounted she really hasn't worked very hard....
Thanks in advance,
Paul Prefer to have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!

Glowplugs sounds like the cold start problem.
Poor economy, could be egr valves (you can blank yours easily) Could be binding brakes, or blocked intercooler (mud etc) or intercooler blocked internally (oil residue), or split turbo pipe, or delaminated turbo pipe.
Lots of possibilities to consider. I would go in order of cheapness.
EGR blank first.
Jack up and check for binding brakes.
Take off intercooler and hoses and have a good close inspection.
Just guessing off the top of my head. My D3 always used more fuel in cold weather. Drooped from 25mpg to 22mpg in winter. Both D3's did this.

Hi Gareth,
there is a little weeping in the front right side, which I think could be turbo related... I guess I will just take a tub of Vaseline with me to LR dealership tomorrow... Prefer to have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!

Air filter first to change as diesels love fresh air and around town driving is not the best way to get economy out of a 2.7 tonne 4x4.i find giving the pre heaters 2 cycles b4 cranking helps in the colder conditions.
Is your map sensor good too????????

Turbo is at back left side of the engine (from the drivers seat)
