diff sweating oil

Hello all,

so my beloved 2004 D3 is at the dealer right now...
Dealer informs me that the front diff is 'sweating' a bit, they filled it up with a little oil but they tell me it will need replacement somewhere in the nearer future. Not now, but in 25000-50000 it will have to be changed.

The car will be 10 years old this August, has covered 175,000 km (of which 130,000 by me) and during the time I drive it, it did not have a particularly hard life. I tow a 1600 kg caravan to southern France and back and all the rest is motorway and urban traffic. No offroading and I have two sets of tyres (summer and winter) that I have not replaced - this could give an idea of my driving habits.

The dealer proposes to fit a refurbed diff. My question is: is this a normal life span for a diff?

These diffs are not cheap, I will certainly check with TLO for a quote on it.

Regards,
Wiljo

Have you had the front diff breather cap mod/ improvement done? LR redesigned the cap on the end.....if it becomes blocked it will cause the diff to leak on the seals.......mine looked like it was going to end up needing replacement at some point due to a small leak on the seals - changed breather cap and it stopped leaking straight away Thumbs Up

Thanks CDS and Woolmeister Thumbs Up
The dealer confirmed it is their practice to check if the breather cap mod has been carried out and if the breather is blocked. The mod was done and the breather is not blocked.

Also they tell me the sweat is not coming from the seals but from another part that I cannot translate (dutch: pasvlakken).

All in all the list comes down to:
- diff needs to be changed (in next 25000 kms)
- all brake lines are so badly corroded they need replacement, body off job
- front and rear bushes need to be replaced (have a little play, can wait for a while)
- wiper blades in bad shape

The only good news is that I thought the ciggy lighter was broken, but it appeared to work fine.

Thx Geoff but in the long run, that will cost me more than all the above work together. I'll pass on that one.

pasvlakken- Locating points or mating surfaces is the best I can find?

Thx Caver, I also found 'joint face'. Does this make sense to anyone more technically 'in the know'?

I would hazard a guess that they are referring to the mating faces of each half of the diff, as seen in this exploded diagram:

Perhaps a decent transmissions place could skim the mating faces and rebuild it with a new seal/gasket (labeled 11 here)?

Steve,

Thx for this, as you call it mating faces that must be the correct term.
Yes, they probably could, the engineer told me that rebuilding a diff would cost more than a refurbished differential.
Aside from the cost, I'm expert here but I would assume that there is some degree of wear in a diff. Putting back the old pieces leaves you with the old pieces whereas a refurbished one would come with 'as new' inner parts I expect.
