Excessive oil leak!
Any idea what an “excessive oil leak from the rear of the engine†on a MY11 D4 might be? I didn’t take the call, but apparently it’s a big job and I probably won’t get the car back before the weekend.
SHMBO mentioned the words crank, breather and near side but can't remember what order they were in!
It only went to the dealers for a normal 60k service with no faults. It’s all being done under warranty but I just wondered if I should be concerned?
I did a search for D4 oil leak but can’t see a pattern or common cause?

Have they done an oil drain pipe mod for the excessive smoking?“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

No... and I'm lucky in that mine wasn't a smoker.

Right, I've now got further info the service guy directly...
It appears I have an excessive oil leak from the rear near side of the block around the cam seal area. It's a pain to get to so it's a whole body off job.
Thankfully my 3 year LR warranty doesn't run out until March because I'd hate to know what this would cost in another 2 months?
Should I be worried about how they go together after the body's been lifted off ?
I would check anti-roll bar bushes & shims - takes no time at all with the body off.
This would be a good opportunity to wash chassis & underside of body, and consider Waxoiling when you get the car back if you are going to keep it long term.
Likewise I would get them to change the 2 small inter-cooler hoses for silicone.
Get them to check cross-over pipe at rear of the engine.
Consider getting them to take out the turbo studs and drill the threads out to 8mm and replace with 2x M8 flange bolts. This aids future turbo removal massively.
You can get over enthusiastic but it must be worth checking the rear uppers and front lowers. Body off makes no difference to front lowers, but the rear uppers are 5 mins a side, as opposed to 2 hours with the body in place. And a perfect excuse to upgrade to the RRS arm.
Get them to check Wishbones, Steering tie rods, Ball joints & Steering Column UJs.
Some of this will be chargeable - but worth paying for as the body is off, and the end of the warrantee approaches.
Let us know how you get on.

Thanks for that... all sounds sensible and probably worth paying and checking at 60k. I'll have another chat with the dealer.
