Comedy question to ask considering I've just bought a V8 Petrol Disco 3, but hear me out.
My mind tells me that the Goodyear Mud & Snow tyres fitted to my Disco 3 will be less fuel efficient than a dedicated road based tyre.
Firstly, is that assessment correct
Secondly, to those who have changed tyre, was there a noticeable improvement?
The balance then in my mind seems to evolve around reading that I'd heard these particular tyres can be good for up to 40,000 miles (sounds far fetched, but let me continue) and in my experience, leading road tyres like Continental Sport Contact 5's might only be good for 10-12,000 miles.
Based on that fact, even if you only got 24,000 miles out of the M+S tyres, you'd be potentially getting double the distance, which probably negates the fuel economy saving.
Is this all mindless drivel... be honest !!!

I'd say that M+S tyres do bring down the economy. My estimate is ~1mpg - but this could be down to the overheads of operating at cold temperatures too. I did notice on a long run from Luxembourg almost to Milan, I noticed fuel economy at -1 (in freezing fog) changed as the temperature went up to +7.Discovery 3 Manual as PDF | Blackvue 500 | BAS Remap | Mates did South America in a Landie

Which GY m+s tyres specifically?
M&S tyres are really "only" road based tyres anyway (Wrangler & Scorpion Zeros), the mud & snow bit doesn't really mean anything on those tyres. Bit of marketing spin probably.
Re getting better mpg, it's a V8 so it naturally has a thirst. Well someone had to keep the planet toastie!!

I agree with DSL, "M&S" is a pretty meaningless term. The difference between "M&S" branded and non M&S tyres in the mud and snow is marginal.
Actually, IMO, it's a potentially dangerously misleading mark. On several occasions I've read about & personally heard people saying that they'd be OK off-road or at winter ski resorts etc. as they M&S tyres.

General AT customers getting over 40,000 miles, less money than other brands but have had a few say they have lost the odd mile or two on fuel.

Andy put on GG AT's for me a couple of months ago and I have lost 1mpg which I think is ok, great tyres but a bit more road noise than the scorpion's.Transit Custom LWB

Or my fave, Pirelli ATR. Good in all but serious mud, no added noise or thirst and last 50k miles (or so). Just put my second set on. As someone likes to say, the discerning tyre.
Shame those muppets at Pirelli are piddling around with availability.

Are the Pirelli ATR good as a general, day-to-day tyre, something that could be used mostly on tarmac but be capable enough for an occasional muddy track for instance?Cheers,
Gareth

Absolutely!! As are GG AT's.
As Andy sez, marmite. Both will do the job well and preference is often down to experiences. I standardised on ATRs (sold my muds & roads) because that's what was available then, AT's came later. Also can depend on the look of the tyre, some peeps like a rufty tufty image, ATs have that but ATRs look a bit boy racer like. Not that looks have ever worried me, so SWMBO tells me when referring to my jeans & t-shirt fashion style.

ATR's are good enough for the man who started this site
I drive 20k-25k miles pa and venture off road to some degree or other every week. 50k miles is easily achievable from a set with 3mm tread remaining. In the US they come with a 50k mile conditional guarantee.
Yet to find another tyre that is as good for my needs.
