Key fob in washing machine

I know. Shouldn't have left myself in this situation!

Down to last working fob after replacing battery. (Soon to get new one/s). Working one is not properly sealed but closed shut with duck tape so probably not watertight.

Anyway. Abroad in Norway with D3 parked in the a Gatwick long stay.

Just found missus put my trousers in wash while away. With key fob in. Trousers dried. Fob dried and curcuit dry inside but has that slight electrical burning short circuit smell.

I can get in manual lock with key but will the chip be damaged do you think and stop they key from registering with the car?

Worried I won't be able to get the car out of the car out of the car park.

Most probably the battery has shorted out and is now totally flat. Rolling Eyes

When you get back to your car, open using the key in passenger door and put key in ignition to see if it will initially charge. After a few minutes, if you're lucky, it just might work. Thumbs Up

The question in my mind is that I know the metal part of the key won't let the car start because the lock needs to pick up and sense the programmed chip. Before I replaced the battery I was getting in manually and it still started even with a flat fob battery. So would that mean the chip doesn't need any electrical charge for the lock sensor to pick it up?

Well, not sure exactly how the immobiliser works on the D3, but in general usually the key has a transponder which emits RF waves, so it will surely require some sort of electrical power. It will be a very tiny amount of power though, so even with a seemingly flat battery which doesn't have enough power to unlock the car it might still be enough for the transponder.

Still needs the actual transponder chip to be working though... Whistle

Good luck with it. Hope you can get it out of there! Thumbs Up

The transponder chip for the immobiliser is a small self-contained sealed unit which emits a small signal in response to a received electrical stimulus, very similar to a dogs "identichip". There should be no issue with that bit working.

As to the remote locking, the key case "should" be waterproff unless it's been damaged or previously opened, I dropped mine in the sea off the local slipway and had to wait a few hours until the tide went out before I could find it, whereupon - it worked a treat Thumbs Up

Guys. You've given me some hope. Thanks.

The missus has stopped crying too Laughing

But, I've got to stop being a tight numpty and just shell out for a new spare just in case.

Thumbs Up

Washed my FFRR keyfob in the washing machine @ 40C by accident and then dried in in a tumble drier, also by accident.
When the thing cooled down enough to touch, tried it on the car and it worked as before.
Has worked ok for the past year since.
Obviously LR must think keyfobs should be washable. Thumbs Up

If it helps we should all have one of these, lets face it there are enough places to hide on all LR cars

Magnetic Key Boxes

https://www.sks.co.uk/pic.php?url=/_images/db/a4d8a3a3.jpg

An ideal method of securing a spare key underneath your car by using a strong magnet

3 sizes available:
Internal measurements
Standard - 68mm x 37mm x 12mm
Large - 83mm x 43mm x 12mm
*NEW* Extra Large - 99mm x 46mm x 17mm

Finish: Black plastic

I can get a forum price if I have enough interest, they should be around a fiver.

Let me know

Surely if everyone had one things would be really bad… not exactly a challenge for a thief if he knew everyone had one!

The chances of insurance paying out if you left a key attached to the car is?

Each to their own but I would have thought that these are a really bad idea. Having a spare key at home/wife/work/parents/kids/neighbours sounds a better idea to me. There are far too many owners trusting to their last key!

Could be, certainly something I wouldn't be comfortable with. I know they've been around for some time though Neutral
