Buying advice please...

Hello all...
I've got my eye on a 2006, HSE, 2.7 TDV6 with 80K on the clock. Aside from the usual things when buying a used car, is there anything I should particularly look out for?
Thanks
David

Do a few searches on here for the things that can fail, but accept that you are buying a large expensive and heavy motor that needs maintenance that will cost more than a VW polo. But, if you have some technical skills and tools, the basics can be done relatively cheaply and through this forum you are always close to very knowledgeable folk that will offer an opinion and advice. You will be more likely to be going to the garage telling them what is wrong than going asking them to do a diagnosis!

It goes without saying, if you are buying an HSE, make sure that you test every gadget and button on all of the panels. Check for a service history and ideally evidence of parts replacement. See how long previous owners have kept it, if short, may indicate a problem. Perhaps fiind a long term D3 owner to take along for the test drive.

Good luck
2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Hi
I,m in the same boat as you viewing a 2006 S tommorow, been looking a while but this ones cropped up at the right price with right history.
I've looked into the advise on here and asked a few questions.
The main points I have picked up are:
Service history is a must, preferably Land Rover dealer or a well known specialist.
Cam belts need doing at 105K or 7 years, it's expensive I've been quoted around £500 at specialist.
Mileage not so important, as long as they've been looked after.
Check everything works.
If you don't know what to look for take someone who does, I'm taking a friend who has his own garage that looks after quite a few landrovers and he's also a mot tester, it's costing me for his day, but hopefully his knowledge will pay off.
HPI check worth doing, I know someone near me who bought a clone, so check all vin numbers, apparently one is stored electronically (search forum for details)
Hopefully that some points, again if you search the forum the question of buying advice seems to crop up frequently ( including as a say a couple of times by me)
I'm hoping I've now found the right car at the right money, but will know better once I've viewed it tommorow. I've got a 4 hour trip to view the one...........

Thank you both for some very sound advice. It sounds as though long journeys to find the right vehicle aren't uncommon!

Where to start? Check everything works and as others have said, check for proof of regular use and maintenance. Low mileage usually means all the defects have not been flushed out and it's about to throw an expensive bill. Newer D3s ones don't seem to be any better than old ones so again don't always go for the newer reg.

Having said that, get a good one that's been looked after, stay on top of maintenance and it will be a great car. I have a 2005 SE with 130k miles on the clock and I'm not selling because I have spent an absolute fortune to make it as reliable as it is. In 6 years it's had:

Cam belt
Front control arms
Numerous new brakes & the calipers have been stripped at least twice
Air suspension height sensors all round
New air compressor
Parking sensor control module
2 new anti-roll bars
New brake pipes
Serpentine belt tensioner

Still not finished as Geoff is going to flush the gearbox and do the EGRs this weekend!

...and that's on top of regular servicing!

Most practical car I've ever owned, just make sure you get a good one.

I'm travelling from Lincolnshire to Southampton tommorow to view, I've done some background on it, speaking to its current owner a few times and I've also had some additional photos of it emailed, I'm hoping the trip is going to be successfully but only time will tell that.
Initially I was looking for higher spec, but the more I've thought about it the more I've decided all those extra bits are more to go wrong.

ISTR Disco Dunc mentioning that he went through a lot of maintenance between 80k and 120k miles.
For what its worth Ive got to agree as Ive had all sorts of bushes, arms and ball joints replaced in that mileage range.
Its worth remembering that these things weigh just short of 3 tons whether they are covering 10k or 100k a year so suspension wears out regardless.
I started off with nothing and Ive still got most of it left.

Nothing wrong with an "S" spec, Mark Thumbs Up

You should get cold climate pack (heated everything), hi line Harmon Kardon stereo, auto wipers and lights, and auto dipping rear view mirror on an "S". If you're lucky, it might also have xenon lights (but only the early "S" models had these). 2006 is a good MY, too. Thumbs Up

I'm just up the road from Southampton but have to work tomorrow Big Cry .

I concur; mine is 8 & 1/2 years old, and although not yet over 50K, has had plenty of parts (including but not limited to 2 compressors, 2 batteries, 1 alternator, 1 petrol tank and plenty of suspension bits).

...forgot the HK amp blew up as well leaving me without music and a replacement was hard to find. Strange thing about Landie ownership is everything you spend feels like an investment. They start out crap and you gradually make them better!

So if I was looking now I would check for:
- wear on inside of tyres, I missed this and now have suspension arms to fix
- vibrations......I didn't have any but I would now check for play in prop-shaft
- try and get it off the round (hard I know) to check for any play in wheels (bearing)
- any clunking or knocking while driving or breaking

So all above will cost me about £1400, but I have to put it down to experience, only only fond this forum after I got it....

But still the best car in the world Thumbs Up

All of the above , also if the car is short on anything i.e parking sensors not working , any clunks etc , query what the owner has done to solve this , i viewed a few that were "all good everything works" only thing was when i went to view them it turned out that the owner had spent quite a few quid but problems were still there ,

This was found out after studying previous invoices then asking the owner why said parts were purchased,

Brilliant motors though good luck
