Front Diff/ Gearbox

I have a whine coming from my front diff /gearbox and i am not sure which one is at fault.

Going through a process of elimination:
I have recently changed both front bearings and changed the oil in the gearbox with no change.

Is there a way to check which one is at fault?
Is it worth changing the oil and add molyslip to the diff?

Any thoughts ?

Not quite the answer to your question but it is worth checking your diff oil level, the breather is prone to blocking (see modification) causing the diff to leak, when I checked mine there was just a dribble of oil in it, very lucky for me I think!

If the whine is not there when driving, and appears when off the throttle, it's more than likely front diff

My diff is not leaking, but i will check the oil level and the breather pipe anyway.

The whine is constant, its like a drone, doesn't vary with speed or if you go round corners etc

any more ideas ?

May be front diff, I just replaced mine had a noise that I could only describe as wheel bearing like.
It was at road speed, but had no noise at all with 3 ton of van behind.
Drained diff oil after checking wheel bearings and found metal in oil.
Only 91000km on car but has had a lot of towing.
All good now.
 Do not take life too seriously no one gets out alive anyway!
MY 8.5 Izmir Blue HSE Disco 3, ARB Bullbar, IPF HID spot lights, GME TX3440 all in mic UHF, Tripple batteries (2 x Yellow top aux under bonnet), Prodigy brake control, tinted widows, ARB compressor (under bonnet), Prem sound, Prem Nav, Electronic steering column, Adaptive lights, Center fridge, Active diff, Hybrid TV, Side moulds.

I had the same issue and my indie thought it was the transfer box. I have asked to let the oil off for the front diff, gearbox and rear diff and see if there was any residue.

It turned out to be the front diff having plenty of residue in the oil. So replaced that and all is fine now...

This was my symptoms.

Short version :- input pinion bearing was fubar, one of the (many) roller bearings on the tapered pinion was completely missing and disintegrated within the diff.





New diff cured all whining.

Really glad I spotted this thread. I noticed my front diff was leaking slightly from the nearside shaft seal a few weeks ago and hope I've caught it in time.

I'm planning to replace the near side wheel bearing shortly so would be able to remove the drive shaft while doing that.

Can anyone tell me how easy or hard it is to replace the drive shaft seal in the diff?

I can't decide weather to pay the rate and us a genuine LR wheel bearing or pay half as much and go for after market unit. Any opinions ?

Get a Timken one. They are OEM and significantly cheaper than the same item in a LR badged box.

I think Advanced Factors are out of them at the moment but Steve (Boringoldgit) might be along shortly to advise on which to use instead. I know Geoff. fitted some of these to Steve's own D3 only a couple of weeks ago.

Yes out of the Timken, with the way the supplier has been rationing supply to us each month I am tempted to drop them as they are hit and miss with availability. Optimal (German company) is an OE quality unit and will carry our 2 year warranty (and as stated - fitted to my D3 now!)

I'll contact Steve and get a bearing on order.

I notice the brake calibre carrier bolts are like a large male Torx. Not something I currently have in my toolbox. What size/type do I need?
