Metallic Grinding/Vibration Downhill

Howdy!

I just recently purchased a 2005 LR3 HSE. It's been fantastic minus a few water leaks and electrical gremlins that I've fixed myself. 8)

Tonight, we were out looking at Christmas lights, went down quite a steep hill in a lower gear... heard a pretty decent grinding noise. It went away when I put the gas, nearly went away when the steering wheel was angled right.

So, I'm thinking front diff? I've had the diffs and transfer case oils changed. No shocking amounts of metal in the pan. Oils were very dark... but not burnt.

Would a good place to start be a trans flush? Other thing I could figure would be one of the bearings in the front diff.

What are you guys' thoughts?

Did you have hdc on? If you did there will be a green light in the dash of a car going down hill.

If so then the noise is normal.

My money is on HDC/DSC/ABS too. Thumbs Up

If you never heard the noise before I HIGHLY doubt it would be the diff bearings. They usually degenerate progressively over many hundreds of miles before they reach the metal grinding stage.

Wheel bearings, on the other hand, are known to fail suddenly sometimes but if it was a one off noise (no more noises on the way home?) then not the issue. Thumbs Up

prop centre bearing may be the culprit too.

Sure you aren't in Mud & Snow setting?- this operates the abs system on autos when you take your foot of the accelerator or are going downhill, similar to the hill decent control.
 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Ya know, I hadn't thought about hdc/abs. But, I've heard that and it rly doesn't sound like either of those.

I hear a light grinding noise when accelerating when the steering wheel is over to the left side. I'll also experience some driveline backlash in the form of a pop when it up shifts. Seems more like the problem I had last night than abs?

Thanks much for your help! The Rover community is a great place to be a part of, I have to say.

In that case, I would say check the wheel bearing asap. Jack up each corner, and feel for 12 oclock - 6 oclock movement.
