Daylight Running Lights

A new law kicks in on Jan 1st over here and I don't want to be caught out in the Disco. It is a 2008 HSE with directional Xenons - and automatic lights.

I have a number of questions:

1) When driving in daylight the "headlight lamp" isn't on. My assumption means that the headlights aren't on. Is this correct?

2) How can I (or someone else) alter the automatic light functions so that the lights are on continuously but turn off automatically when the key is removed. Lets call this Volvo/Saab behaviour.

In general I have found the automatic lights to be very tolerant of poor light conditions (certainly compared to the Alpina) and I am often overriding its behaviour.

Yes you need to get your CCF file edited for daytime running lights, I would have thought your car would have already had this done??.

Thanks Flack.

I will have to check when the car is sat in daylight with the lights in automatic. If they are not on how do I change the CCF file? Is it easy to do? What tool do I need? Would it be cheaper to get a dealer to do it?

Dodgyken, I feel your pain.
The lights will not be on in daylight if on auto.

I would say that there are 3 ways you(we) can go about it.

1. remember to switch the lights on and off manually every time(but the rear lights will be on too)

2. install some LED DRLs, not too difficult, but might look good or not depending on where/type installed. (I have a set installed, but not with legal measurements)

2. ask the dealer to activate the Canadian or Scandinavian lights setting(only headlights on)

The CCF DRL method does switch the tail lights on too - certainly on Scandavian mode which I've got enabled on my D3.

I don't know if that applies to Canadian mode as I can't really use it since the D3 is a manual and the EPB application switches the headlights off, and I do use the EPB at traffic lights etc, like a good boy Wink

You could always replace your Fogs with this Osram DRL/Fog/Cornering kit

Looks great but you will need to enlarge the hole in the fog lamp surround trims - I did mine with this kit.

I am back in the UK next week (not the best time for dealer opening times) but I have emailed the local one asking whether they can do this - and how much they would like to lift from my wallet.

It is that or a trip to Emil Frey - who will most likely take the whole wallet, a kidney and perhaps a couple of other organs Laughing Laughing

Had a quick chat - OK - long chat with the Stratstone service manager - and a technician. The advice is:

Yes - that this can't be done on the D3 - as the car isn't fitted with the LEDs. And that fitting aftermarket ones or messing about with light sensor lights is asking for trouble with the Disco 3 electrics.

It looks like I will go back to plan A - switching the lights on each time Sad

I knew I should have bought the D4 V8 Laughing

As per usual they are talking Censored , it can be done and if done the right way it does not effect the D3 electronics.

The independent garage is off to do some research now.

Of the 3 cars this is the only one I expect to have issues with

Do the yogi mode or get some aftermarket DRL's (can be found in jumbo) they will have no negative impact on the d3's electrical system.
