TDV 6 Oil

Hi,

According to the handbook, engine top up oil for the TDV6 should be 5W/30 Castrol?

What engine oil are the majority using for topping up?

Have some Castrol Magnatec 10W/40 from my previous TD5 and wondered if this would be OK?

Thanks.

Griff.

Got some 5w /30 fully synthetic oil from local car shop for £23, and it seems great.

My last service at the LR dealer it got filled up with Shell Helix 5W/30. When it needed a top-up again, I got a 1ltr bottle from a Shell petrol station. They do two versions of 5W/30 - one for Ford engines and one for VW engines. We need the Ford spec oil.

Or Castrol Magnatec 5W/30 in Halfords. But they have it in the petrol oil section, not the diesel section.

i would stick to the right grade that LR specify i needed a top up a few months before the service and i couldn't find the right grade in halfords so i grudgingly went to the local stealer and bought 1 litre for £3 less than halfords 1 L of magnetec(wrong grade) so sometimes landrover can suprise

I got the Castrol Magnatec 5W/30 from Macro, about £25 for the 5ltr tub.

According to the Castrol Website this was designed for Ford engines and meets Ford WSS-M2C913-A standard Thud ..... that's enough for me.

Interesting note... went on to the Castrol web site and did a search by car, for the D3 2.7TDV6 this is the search result

Castrol's best oil for your vehicle: EDGE TURBO DIESEL 0W-30 Shocked
Alternative recommendation: MAGNATEC 5W-30 A1

As LR specify Castrol 5W-30, I will stick with the alternative... what is the advantage of the 0W

I purchased 1 litre of Castrol 5W/30 with disposable funnels and wipes
in a Blue case with Landrover logo from the dealer who supplied my car.

After trying to buy the oil stated in the handbook from Halfords and local service stations, I gave up and at my from my local dealer asked for a litre of oil for TDV6 and was supplied with a litre of LR Ultra High Performance 5W30 STC 50527.

However, when I had the car serviced, the same dealer left a litre of Mobil 1 Protection Formula Fully Synthetic 0W-40 in the vehicle for topping up purposes.

In Australia the Castrol website reccommends either:
Crankcase

CASTROL EDGE SPORT 5W-30
Castrol Edge Sport 5W-30 is a full synthetic SAE 5W-30, API SM/CF. ACEA A3/B3/B4 engine oil formulated for highly tuned fast fours and latest technology engines. It provides superb strength and ultimate protection even when running hard, fast or hot.
CASTROL EDGE 0W-40
Castrol Edge 0W-40 is Castrol's best. It is a full synthetic, SAE 0W-40, API SM/CF, ACEA A3/B3/B4 engine oil, formulated for high performance and prestige vehicles. The exceptional characteristics of this free flowing oil reduces friction and delivers ultimate wear protection and optimum engine performance right from start-up.

ALSO:
"Non locking differential shown; manufacturer recommends Castrol SAF-XO. If fitted with electronic locking differential use Castrol SAF Carbon Mod Plus, 1.6 litres."
