why not just keep it simple

I know we have to have progression and development, otherwise we'd still have candles and not light bulbs, but what was wrong with having a dipstick to check the friggin oil level?

Now, it has to be warmed up, then left to stand to 10 mins, and then via some electrickey, you can check the oil level from the drivers seat. If you try just before 10 mins it says Censored off and come back later (or some other stupid f'in message).

Gadgets for gadgets sake!!

I just check it before starting.

Not sure all that warm oil stuff makes any difference to the reported level.

From 15 deg C to 80 deg C the olie will increase almost 6% in volume.
Depending on the shape of the sump, this can have quite an effect on the level!

Dipstick thing has been discussed - apparently dipsticks aren't as good and are prone to leaking etc hence they are removed - there might be a thread on here about it

Surely if the car is so Censored smart, it should be able to tell what the oil temp is and how long it's been standing and compensate accordingly.

All seems a bit OTT to me Rolling Eyes

I am sure in a few years time there will be posts on here on 'how do I replace my oil level sensor' IMHO stupid to replace a simple failsafe dipstick with something so complex

the only think wrong with an LR dipstick was those stupid balls on the wire to show the level.

Just keep it simple, My missus's suzuki dipstick is flat and has two holes, one the the low level, one for the full - nice and simple (and other have two lines - its doesnt need more than that)

I can check the oil level from cold. However when I use the car I need to wait at least 10m before having a reading.

Is the way to read the oil level is somehow different from Petrol to Diesel?

The pain-in-the- Censored dipstick ball did not last long on my D3 - I melted it off after getting frustrated with it. I'm sure I was not the only one to do this as the dipstick was far easer to use without it.

Thumbs Up

Doesn't no dipstick mean no means of sucking or the old oil for a service? Maybe a little silver lining in the cloud. Thumbs Up

I've never used it there is a dedicated suck tube on the D4 that goes to the very bottom of the sump. There is a bespoke LR adaptor for dealers so that they can suck, filter change and fill without the technician moving his feet.

Apparently the lack of dipstick enables the engine to be better sealed for emissions etc

Our audi a5 has no dip stick, like you say, run engine, must be warm, then it has to settle for 10 mins, then you can check, put in some oil la la la, its so frustrating!
