U turn by Continental on using winter tyres in the summer.

From the Global Continental website:
http://www.continental-tires.com/www/tires...er_en.html

Contradicts Continentals previous statement about using winters all year round. I suspect it was made after a Swiss motoring magazine commissioned the TÃœV SÃœD to test Winter tyres in the summer.

Interesting reading and it seems consistent advice in winter v summer tyre tests. I was hugely tempted to get Wintrac 4 Extreme tyres instead of Pirelli ATR a couple of months back, but as I don't want the hassle of storing winter tyres during the summer, despite many comments about Wintrac being great in summer, I stuck with the 'All Season' ATR. Perhaps the 'All Season' tyre is an all round compromise, not great in either season, but it works for me in my semi rural environment.

Still stick with my opinion on this............. And many others. Wink

Especially as the Wintrac performs very well. Thumbs Up

As there are normally less than 3 months a year when winter tyres are a real benefit (down south), is the other way not less risky in terms of time on the road.

I wonder what insurance companies think of it. Personally I think having a set of both is the ideal option though.

Many people where I live run winter tyres all year round. And we have summer from April - September!

But certainly in 30 degrees of heat, your winter tyres are not going to last like your summer tyres. OK on a Fiat Panda but on 3 tons of Land Rover.....I'm switching each season!!

With a pinch of salt, I would take it.....

Will still switch, even though SWMBO's got Conti winters. Like it says on the tin, winter tyres for winter. Thumbs Up

I work in the Ambulance service and all our Rapid Response Cars are put onto winter tyres for the winter. The big ambulances run on All Season tyres all year round. As far as I know the Police around here use winter tyres in winter too. Yesterday I had Kwik Fit put Good Year Ultra Grip SUV 4x4 Winter tyres onto my D3. I can't wait for some snow now! I am spending two weeks in the Scottish mountains in February so will get some then for sure. Kwik Fit are storing my summer tyres in what they call the "Hotel" for a charge of £75. Otherwise they would have added to the clutter in my garage.

make sure Kwik Fit can identify your tyres, I read somewhere where a customer ended up with someone elses' tyres as they couldn't identify the right ones as they had only written the size and number of tyres down????

It should be ok, they shrink wrap each customers tyres (as a set) and they gave me a receipt showing what size the tyres were, what make and with tread depth readings at three different places across the tread for each tyre. They also said that if they lose them you get new tyres.
