Plasti Dipping my wheels today
So I started plasti dipping my wheels today, the weather is a balmy 44 degrees and so far so good. I just finished my third coat and waiting for the wheels to dry before I put on my fourth coat. So in the meantime I thought i'd post some pics and my progress.
Here is one of my wheels. Make sure you clean all tires with a degreaser and than wipe with alcohol. Also tape over your valve stem. Afterwards get a bucket of hot water and put your plastidip spray cans into it. This will make sure your spray cans spray without clumps and smoothly.
Next take a garbage bag and wrap it around your disk brakes. Make sure the bag is not touching the back of your rim's spokes. If it does and you start painting, when it's time to pull out the bag it might get stuck to the rim and pull off your plastidip.
Spray in short small bursts. Also concentrate thick sprays around the rims edge. This will help you later in removing the overspray. The thicker the coverage the easier the removal. The first round of spraying just put on a light coat.
The second coat cover about 80%
the third coat make sure you get all the nooks and crannies.
The smaller amounts of spray between coats makes the plastidip adhere better, as far as to my knowledge. Ok I'm on to my fourth coat and will update later with final results.
Here's the fourth coat.
Here's the LR3 with black plasti dipped wheels. I'm amazed how easy it was to do. Now to see how resilient it is to the New England elements.
do you guys think I should keep the wheel caps black or should I expose the land rover logos? Like the pic below.

You can expose the logo when it all dries, simply take an exacto knife around the emblem and it peels right off. You can now get the plastidip in gunmetal grey.Narpy's Grill Mod, Suspension Rods, Ultra guage, wrangler Goodyear duratracs 265/60/18, new thermostat, diff oils changed, brake switch new, aluminum rack floor, LED driving lights in foglights, rear camera, just need gvif unit, next on list! Special note:
When you are finished with your second to last coat I would suggest you roll your truck back so the tires rotate 180 degrees, so now you can get all the nook and crannies that you missed underneath the spokes. I didn't and after I removed all the plastic over my brakes I realized I missed some spots . So my mistake is your gain of knowledge. I also removed the black from the emblem, first you puncture the emblem with a sharp tool, I used a tool pick and then you grab the torn plastidip and peel back. It comes off cleanly.

How many cans does it take to get a couple of coats on all 4 wheels? My paint is starting to look a little ropey and I can't see a full wheel refurb being cheap (or vfm come resale time)
I've just seen some silver metallizer on the plasti dip website,, has anyone used this before?2011 D4 SDV6 HSE

I used 3 cans to get about 5 coats on each wheel. I didn't paint the back insides. No need to.Narpy's Grill Mod, Suspension Rods, Ultra guage, wrangler Goodyear duratracs 265/60/18, new thermostat, diff oils changed, brake switch new, aluminum rack floor, LED driving lights in foglights, rear camera, just need gvif unit, next on list! I've just seen the foliatec spray, similar stuff but available in a few different colours (including silver), anyone used it?
I quite like the silver wheels on mine, they just look tatty as the previous owner allowed the brake dust far to much time on them so may just use this to give them a cheap "refurb"
It helps that it's being stocked by my local factor as well...2011 D4 SDV6 HSE

Marmoset, I felt the same about my 8 year old wheels and then tried IronX. Amazing at lifting all the ingrained metal and rust. Took a couple of treatments but it is easy to use - spray on and wash off. I now use it every other wash of the car and it keeps the wheels looking good.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

This has been on my "to do" list for a couple of months now, since I got my 2nd set if wheels
I had intended taking them off and doing them individually, but like the idea of doing them while on the car....
Thanks for the write-up
I too would recommended Iron-X,especially if you want a completely clean wheel before starting"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...
