Vibration before gear change

Hi,
My Disco 3 has over the last few months developed a buzzing/booming/vibration when it should be changing down at around 1600 rpm, usually when I start up a slight incline in cruise control.
I have to push the throttle pedal to 'force' it to change down.
Last week I was doing around 70 on the motorway when the display in quick succession showed 'transmission fault' 'limited gear selection available' 'suspension lowering'. After stopping on the hard shoulder I carried on without any further issues.
The car is now with an auto transmission specialist who has told me that there is evidence of significant general wear I.e. metal particles in various locations in the sump. They are now stripping it down to investigate further.
The torque converter has been replaced just under a year ago.
When the garage rings me back and says the gearbox needs replacing do I say fine do it?
Cheers,
Gordon

I have not heard of the symptoms that you describe, despite having spent a few years following all transmission threads closely as I had the judder (do a search for more info) from my transmission and eventually had the TC replaced.

Why did you have the torque converter replaced? Was there a warranty? Is it the same firm that is inspecting the transmission and saying there is metal in the sump? How satisfied are you that the new TC was replaced properly with the correct fluid used and filled correctly?

Lots of questions I am afraid, but I would start with the origin of the TC failure and those that changed it.
2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

Thanks Barn1e.
I had "the judder" - that is what lead to the replacement torque converter. As well as the judder the rpm hunted around. This was cured by the TC change. At no time during this earlier problem did I get a 'transmission fault' message.
This is similar in some ways, but rather than a judder it is the noise you would get in a manual if you didn't change to 3rd from 4th when you started up an incline withlow revs. i.e. more like a reverberation that booms in the cabin. I suppose that is exactly what it is. I react to this by pushing the accelerator hard enough to 'kick' it into changing, often down an extra gear.
The TC has a 2 year waranty so its a year to go. Yes this is the same shop that did the TC.
I'm as confident as I can be that they are a good company. They are well known and I was advides to use them by a LR main dealer.

Do you get the same effects if you use the 'manual' selector ?? Just wondering if it's a software issue, have you had the gearbox adaptations reset ??

Nope - not even heard of that. I told them yesterday to strip it down and diagnose the problem so I think its too late for me to consider this as an option.
Cheers,
