ATR's on 18" or 19" rims
Ignoring cost of the Rims ...on a D4 would you prefer ATR's on 18" rims (P1880D) or 19" and why ?Peter

I may be wrong but I didn't think you could run 18" rims on a D4 due to the bigger brakes?

I've run Pirelli ATR's on both 18" and 19" rims on my D3 and now run 19" ATR's on my D4.
I preferred 18" for the following reasons:
. Deeper sidewall, preferable for off-road and almost impossible to kerb the rims.
. More comfortable ride on road, D3 seemed even smoother especially on the motorway. Good for me as I drive 20-25k mile pa.
. Tyres seemed to last even longer. I'd expect a min. of 55k miles from a set of ATR's.
. This is obviously an individual preference, but I prefer the look of a deeper sidewall on what is one of the worlds best off-road vehicles.
There is a tiny bit more "roll" when fast cornering in comparison to a 19" rim, but I got used to that within a very short time. As an aside, I found the "roll" just too much on 17" rims.
I'm perfectly happy with my 19" ATR's and they survived totally unscathed from the worst that the Strata Florida and the rocky lanes of North and Mid-Wales could throw at them. Whilst the ATR is not a mud tyre, I found that with them fitted i never bothered to fit my set of 19" rims with MTR's, as such I sold the MTR's. Others here have done the same. Important to me as I go off-road every week.
But as you asked, my first choice would be 18"s.
Do bear in mind that Pirelli are currently not officially supplying the ATR in 255 -55-19 to the UK. So future replacements could be hard to source from the EU, you might even have to get them from the US or Canada. AFAIK, no such supply problems with the 18"'s.

Steve
An O/E 18" Land Rover rim will not fit over the standard D4 brakes. So if you want an 18" rim on a D4, you fit Compomotive PD1880 rims, or make modifications to the braking system.(Good luck telling your insurance company about that )

Thanks LT
I am tempted by the Compmotive P1880D one thing for sure after changing over to Ultragrips this winter not putting the Wranglers back on ! so it either 18 or 19 ATR's
Am I right in thinking the 18" ART's are widely available in the UKPeter

Same reason I sold my 10 x MTRs, the ATRs does everything I need with no added noise or mpg, plus tough as old boots. 35k on my set but changed them due to noise & inner wear, plus a new set in my garage calling my name. They are not super in deep mud but that's once in a blue moon for me. They've done 3 x Pyrenees trips, fair bit of laning including Salisbury Plains and loads of road miles without a single puncture. Have seen them in use in the Sahara and they did pretty good in the hot sand. Also used them in deep snow without any problems. More than happy with them, would struggle to find an equivalent.
Cue pic of D3 with ATRs with light dusting of the white stuff.

Forget the D3, it's the wheelie bin in the background that's important!
