Transmission Range Change Not Available

Hi, I'm hoping someone can shed some light on this Fault message.

When driving on a flat stretch of road or hitting an incline at around 2000rpm the engine surges and it sound like the engine is labouring under load. It will all of a sudden then change down, rev's up to 3000-3200rpm and change up, then down , then up again, searching for gears. then message appear " transmission range change not available"- power drop off and then pick up again but very, very slowly.
It felt like there were no power, didn't want to pull up hill even after moving into Comand shift.
Went out today and it was pulling fine untill same message appear again and power dropped off, but then didn't experians the power loss like last night.
May this be a Transmission ECU on its way out or may be bad connections?
