Think I remember something about a coolant or oil temperature sensor that may cause it.

Mine had similar symptoms to a bad torque converter a few years back - surging as if you were coming on and off the power and the rev counter rising and falling with it. Turned out to be a faulty MAF (mass air flow) sensor. Easy to test for - unplug it (it's just after the air filter) and if it's bad the car will run better - the engine management system falls back to a default map.

Have also had the oil temp sensor go. That didn't cause surging when driving in the same way but it makes the engine idle too fast and sometimes "blips" the throttle to keep the revs up. The temperature gauge dropped to zero when that was playing up.

Hope that might help - good luck!
