Performance upgrade

Evening all, just booked our summer jaunt to porec in Croatia for out jollies. Whilst the D4 is new I will be towing a twin axle van some 3000 miles over some long steep hills through Italy. Even though it has the 255 bhp engine and 8 speed box would any of you consider getting the engine chipped by Bell autoes. Regards. Graeme

No I probably wouldn't. BAS maps are excellent but the 8-speed and SDV6 engine has brilliant torque delivery as it is and arguably not worth the effort of having your ECU hacked into.

If you could remap via the OBD port without a physical modification I may view things differently, but more for fun than towing.

Thumbs Up

More than enough oomph, van is same size as mine and I cope well enough without 3ltr or 8 speeds!!

Brakes are more of a consideration, lots of up means lots of down, might need to manage your brakes and speed to ensure you don't start getting some fade.

I wouldn't think there is any need for dragging couple of tonnes of tin tent around, my D4 doesn't feel like it needs more towing 3 tonnes + up long steep hills. I'm usually overtaking cars and still exceeding the speed limit....

Is there not a better system than as Robbie says hacking into the ECU? The new BMW's can't be done without removing the ECU but a local tuner uses a piggyback ECU that's chipped instead of the original.

The only downside is with the black wheels against a black car you cant really see the wheels apart from that very nice and looks a crackin unit youve got there Thumbs Up

Ps i tow a 2 tonne twin axle to cornwall and back regular and never feel underpowered with a 10 yr old 2.7 170 bhp shel pulsl uphill no problem . The D4 will eat it up effortlessly no remap required

I agree there's nothing amiss with the D3/4 as is. But 310bhp and 730nm is lots!
