| Land Rover service plan - cancel it or not? |

hi,
my guess is you are all going to say "yes cancel it you mad fool". I took my D4 for a service yesterday at Stratstone (its 2nd service at 35k). The cost was 430 for the service and another 220 for rear brake pads  . I have been paying 53 per month for the last 12 months and it is a three year programme. therefore the cost of three years of services were smoothed out over 36 months to arrive at 53.
I walked into the service dept rather smug thinking I had all the costs covered, but tyres, wiper blades and brake pads are not covered, hence the extra costs.
my gut feel though is I am being stitched up good and proper and that I should probably just cancel the direct debit, get any money owed to me out and start to take it to a good independent.
the D4 has cost a mint this month, with two tyres replaced just last week at 380 for two general grabber ATs. The D3 needs a service in feb and will definitely be taking it to an independent. any recommendations for good places in staffordshire?

Over how many months do you have to keep paying £53, surely that's not every month for 36 months???
I took out a 2 year service plan with Stratstones at Bury and I paid mine over 8 months. Total cost of service plan was £399, which for two services I thought was pretty reasonable especially at a main dealers and I get a loan car thrown in too for the day.
Using that as a bench mark, you should be paying over 12 months and that would seem about right.  Mods:

£636 a year for a single service? 
To put it into context, £1900 for 3 services!
On another note, £220 for rear brake pads

hi narpy,
just checked the contract - its 53 over 27 months which equates to £1493.60 for 3 services. just recalling the conversation i had with the service manager and I am sure he saids its about 320 for minor service and 420 for major. so i have bought two major and one minor - which according to my calculator is 1160. Just going to phone them up now and get an explanation. the 1493 includes a 10% discount they gave me! sounds like they have scr  ed me good and proper

yup - i really should have looked closer last year when they got me to sign the contract. just going to phone them up now for an explanation. i reckon i have a over 100 quid left that I have paid in this year alone so will be asking for it back and cancelling the contract. most embarrassing really as I should have realised at the time this was overkill.

Can you not have the basic service done under the plan and go elsewhere for any extras? A main dealer is always going to charge the earth for extras, especially when they have your car in bits on a ramp, you're a captive audience as they say. Discovery 4 HSE

Statstones tried to get me to do a service plan back in oct but declined, ties you to main dealer at their prices and what happens if you sell, also had to have HP which meant interest wiped out any savings on service plan
As part of the deal I have a free service in Jan but I am prepared for costly extras being found at this service like brake pads

I paid £1000 for 3 years servicing when I bought mine, seems quite reasonable. Anything not covered like brake pads I would definitely do myself, and £220, they are laughing all the way to the bank. They should check them as part of the service so the wheels are already off, it must only take 30 minutes from there if they are really really slow! Joined the BMWX5 45e group
