A little advice please

Morning all, I'm currently looking at changing vehicles and really like the D4, although I've been a LR fan for many years the new ML250 bluetec also appeals for its fuel economy figures, help and advice much appeciated. We have a young family (3 kids) so the discos rear space is ideal.

so what advice is it you're after. D4 has loads of space for just about everything you're likely to want to put in a car, is comfortable, and will go anywhere.

As for economy, well thats very subjective, and you will get an array of comments/feedback on that one. Mine, well 30MPG motorway cruising is the best I've got, 24ish pottering around town. All 3Ltr D4's are automatics (Pre 2011 6 speed, post 2011 8 speed)

Thanks Al, any pro and cons are gratefully received to be honest. I'm not expecting fantastic economy of course, I'd just like the feedback from current owners on their own experiences

You don't buy these cars for their economy. Laughing

You buy them because they do so much:

Van
Limmo
Tow truck
Adventure vehicle
Life style support
Family protector
Bus

They are the most versatile cars you can use day to day. Friends of mine have just bought and regretted getting a new ML because it doesn't have the versatility of a discovery.

the Merc is a car, the Landy really gets to be a way of life! I don't know what I would replace mine with except another.

I did lots of research last year - I need a big 4WD with loads of space, that could tow 3+ tons on grass/rough tracks if necessary and was good for long hauls/motorways. BMW X5 ticked all the boxes except useless off road, Merc ML250 same and if you want a proper Merc you need to go up to G at nearly double the price. The Toyota Landcruiser has been ruined in the back with the addition of electric third row seats which loses masses of space and depth, good off road but not so good on road.....

Absolutely no contest - the Disco 4 wins hands down. My decision is still absolutely right a year later......

I can only echo every single comment above.....
I looked at the Merc when it was time to change in April....not a patch on the D4,with lots of nasty chrome everywhere.....cant comment on what its like to drive,as was so put-off that I didn't even bother taking it for a test drive.
7 months on,and not once have I regretted my decision Thumbs Up

Don't be conned by the economy figures given by Mercedes. The Germans seem to be the absolute masters of fiddling the figures, when in reality they are no better than others. We tested a D4 against an ML350 (not the 250) for a publication, and whilst the figures on paper were miles apart (with the Merc being far better) the reality was that there was very little in it, but the surprise was that the D4 was the more economical.

As others have said, the D4 is many vehicles in one. The Merc isn't. It all depends what you're after really.

I have twice in the past "replaced" a Range Rover or Discovery with a Mercedes.

On both occasions I couldn't bring myself to P/X my LR keeping it for "rough duties" - shooting & the like.

In each case after a few months the Mercedes was disposed of, and I moved up to a more recent LR.

I haven't been without a FFRR or Discovery since buying a 2 door Fleetline in 1979 or 1980.

I expect to drive a LR until I die - hopefully not behind the wheel!
