b) Exactly where (under the bonnet etc) the Lamp Relay (numbered 30,86,87,85) is
I believe this is a seperately purchased relay (this is what I've done) as these are the standard relay pin numbers?

c) The best way of linking 30 via fuse to the battery.
there's a +tive junction block just at the front of the fuse box under the lid next to the battery

d) If abandoning the switch, can pin 85 just be strapped to an earth point
yes, earth junction just in front of the main battery/fuse box on inneer N/S wing

Thanks Steve,
Not going to use a switch, I want them to come on with main beam.
So I'll wait to hear how your questions are answered.
Thanks BM, but where is TFC when you really need him!!!

The diagram is as Steve shows - although I'd strongly recommend you fit a switch somewhere within arms reach.... Auxiliary driving lamps are only legal in UK if they a)come on with main beam only and b) are switchable so as not to activate them unless they are 'needed'.
Failure to comply will breach the construction & use regulations, mean that when you have a MoT, your car will fail and finally, leave you open to plod giving you a fixed penalty and requiring you to rectify and get the car MoT'd.... wiring colour, dependent upon which headlamp you use is either blue/orange or blue/pink
If you are fitting a switch, use the grommet next to the brake vaccum unit (meant for the clutch hydraulics) as an easy route in & out of the cabin.
to use without a relay switch (see above ) just take terminal 85 to any convenient earth point. the relay isn't part of the D3, most car accessory shops will sell them, some have a fuse facility built in. The terminal numbering is 'standard' although in some cases, terminals 30 & 86 may be transposed.
The fuse can be connected to the battery by using the bolt holding the link wire to the BJB
if it's still a problem, i'll come & wire them in for you in exchange for some beer tokens

Thanks indeed - I feel I can do it in two stages now - first get them working without a switch, and then when I feel brave enough to take the drill/saw to the dash, I'll fit the kosher switch. The box of LR bits I have that came with my driving lights is somewhat... ahem... buried under sh*t in the garage - I'm pretty sure there was a relay and inline fuse in there somewhere - I'll have a rummage tomorrow when SWMBO is out Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
