Cruise control when going down hill.

Hi,
Having problems with my 2013 Disco4 XS, the issue is with the cruise control whilst going down a steepish hill, if the cruise is set to 70, it's tends to hit 77mph+. The car is not what could be called heavily loaded.
I have spoken to two dealers, one informs me it's to do with new legislation not allowing the ABS to work in conjunction with the cruise! I'm not convinced if a little porkie is being told.
Never had any of this in my 2004 TD5 cruise control.

The cruise control does not operate the brakes. If the car is going down a steep enough hill and the cc is already demanding zero throttle there is nothing else it can do.

Same brands or automobiles (thinking of those made near a big German city beginning with M) do use the braking system to maintain the set speed, however LR isn't that brand. Whistle

You can manually ask the car to downshift using the flappy paddle so that you get more engine braking. The cruise control will stay active and keep your set speed. Assuming you're in D not S, then it will revert back to full auto when the engine braking is no longer needed.

I believe that the "Adaptive" cruise control systems do make use of the brakes to slow the car when needed.

Agree with whats said about D3/D4

& that Cruise doesn't brake & correct momentum..
however my XK changes down & engine brakes on steepish hills..if you done brake....
the car doesn't runaway with itself....without use of flappy paddles

If you have adaptive cruise, that operates the brakes (hate it) and will detect you approaching cars and brake you but its not on the disco's

The sport's cruise would keep it +/-2mph on hills i found - it never ran away that far on normal cruise, it would only use the engine/gearbox to do it though

Jon,

I'm not sure that's the case fella. When cruise is set, it will aim to maintain the target speed regardless of whatever gear the car is in at the time. Changing down via the paddle will just increase the revs! It is true that cruise on the D4 does not use the brakes and you will need to apply driver input on a steep descent.

I doubt if some will agree..

the art of driving an auto....
is to use foot off accelerator to slow (requires anticipation)
rather than accelerator - brake - accelerator - brake which goes for an un-smooth ride & just wears the brakes out....
descents you take you foot off completely & the car will gather some speed but also will shift down
& you can also change down 1 cog...

.......as an example my VW golf with DSG is still on its 1st set of brake pads & discs 67k & 3 years 9 months in my disco ones last at least 25k to 28k miles (other people also drive this & not in the same (frugal) way....

I wouldn't expect the CC to control say a steep or fast downhill descent...i Came down some really steep fast roads this autumn going to & coming back from Italy (XK) the system on here is superb...back off the throttle & the car goes slower by changing down itself...

The old technique was to knock it into neutral and coast down as fast as you could so that you got as far as possible up the other side without having to use fuel. Then getting it into gear while still moving with a Gardiner 180 and a crash box certainly seperated men from the others. With this auto-thingie it sounds like you dont even need to be there!

I only ever worked on one - an alternator power unit on a BP ship....just brilliant

Heavy towing, first changed front pads and discs at 70K and rear pads at 95K always use manual shift on hills and anticipation driving many many thousand up and down mountain's in France Spain, on top of that 70K on AT Grabbers, trick is let the disco do her thing and don't push her, maybe it's something to be a Class 1 driver as well???? sure i'll get stink for that

L. Gardner and Sons Ltd was a well-known British builder of diesel engines for stationary, marine, road and rail applications. The company was founded in Hulme Manchester England in 1868. They started building engines around 1895. The firm of L. Gardner & Sons ceased engine production in the mid-1990s.

The '180' produced 180 HP at 1850 RPM from 10,450cc not a lot of horses but plenty torque to lug a fair few tons of freight Thumbs Up

My petrol D3 changed down on steep hills of its own accord to control/reduce speed, my diesel D4 does not, (similar to the OP) - not sure what the sw change is that allows this?

Most of the engines you see in the back of the fair ground wagons that power generators are either Gardners or Cummings they are indestructible .
