Many thanks to Bodsy and his box of electrickery, I now have timed climate control enabled in the D4. Just have to heed the warnings about this possibly draining the battery.
Also have chirp on lock and unlock (although the pitch of the chirp on lock is such that with my dodgy ears, I cant hear it - the double chirp on unlock I can )

I'm quite sure that mine turns off (or won't even start) if the battery is anything other than very well charged so I wouldn't worry too much.
Used it a few times (partly because I was testing/fiddling with the remote climate as well) and then only did very short journeys. On the third day, fired it with the remote - it ran for about 5 mins then stopped. Went out to the car and peered through the window and saw a message on the screen that said something like 'insufficient battery - unable to activate timed climate'.
The message helpfully vanished the moment I opened the door
The car still started absolutely fine, topped up with battery charger that night and it worked perfectly again the next day.
